3684) Mesa Grande Sovereign Nation, United States of America (USA): A $1 (One Dollar), 1-oz Mercanti Native American Bison
NGC MS70 First Releases: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2025:
The 2025 Native American Bison
Gold & Silver Coins, feature a unique design initially submitted for the U.S. Mint’s "2004-2005
Westward Journey Nickel Coin Series", designed by former Chief
Engraver of the U.S. Mint - John Mercanti.
While not selected then, now, for the first time,
Mercanti’s handsome Native American design has been made available to the
public in the form of limited-edition silver coins.
Revived American Coin Design:
When Mercanti left the U.S. Mint, he was allowed to take
some of his favourite and most iconic unused works with him (a practice that is
no longer allowed today) – which included this design too.
A Masterful Homage to a Classic American Design:
The obverse and reverse were inspired by James Earle
Fraser’s iconic Buffalo Nickel design.
This issue also marks the first time a
denominated coin featuring a Native American design created by the John Mercanti.
Mercanti-Designed Native American Bison Coins Inspired By
Classic Buffalo Nickel:
Former U.S. Mint Chief Engraver John
Mercanti’s design for the 2004–2005 Westwards Journey Nickel Series was not
used.
Now this design features on a new series of Native
American Bison gold & silver coins released by the Mesa Grande Sovereign
Nation.
-
And in a tribute to James Earle Faser Fraser’s original Buffalo Nickel,
Mercanti used the same three Native American Chiefs to create a composite
figure.
While Mercanti’s Native American obverse design
draws upon the same inspiration used by famed U.S. coin designer/sculptor James
Earle Fraser - a composite of Native American Chiefs Iron Tail, Chief Two Moons,
and Chief Big Tree - his version shows the man from the waist up with a large
majestic American Eagle soaring in the background.
The reverse design shows an
American Bison image also created by Mercanti.
Like the symbolism portrayed by
Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel issued from 1913–1938, Mercanti’s design demonstrates
the deep connection between Native heritage and American identity. Mercanti’s
inclusion of an eagle—known to Native Americans as the waŋblí—in his design
represents strength, bravery, and spirituality in Native American cultures.
Each coin has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in
flawless Uncirculated Mint State-70 (MS70) condition, a distinction that means
these perfectly-graded coins have ZERO imperfections - showing all features and
fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. In addition, NGC has
pedigreed each coin available here with a First Releases (FR) certification,
meaning that they are among the first struck by the mint and were verified
within the first 30 days of issue.
Each coin is also legal tender of the Mesa
Grande Sovereign Nation, a federally recognised tribe located in southern
California, about 75 miles northeast of San Diego, California.
These coins will come in a
drawstring pouch along with an individually numbered mint Certificate of
Authenticity (COA) and a story card on the programme.
