Paying Tribute To Chiricahua Apache Culture And History:
The Native American Mint’s Coin sets honouring different tribes continues with the 2025 Apache Tribe Set.
Known for their fierce independence and warrior culture, the Apache Indians are a group of Native American tribes originally from the southwestern United States, including areas of present-day Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and parts of northern Mexico. Traditionally, the Apache lived in diverse environments, from the mountainous regions to the desert plains, which influenced their way of life.
Prairie dogs were a significant food source, especially before the introduction of horses into the Apache culture.
The Apache were nomadic and built temporary dwellings called wickiups made of brush, wood, and grass. They hunted bison, deer, and other game, and gathered wild plants, nuts, and berries. They were also skilled at fishing and gathering edible plants, such as mesquite beans and wild onions.
In times of drought or scarcity, they relied on a diet of corn, beans, and squash, which they cultivated. The Apache people developed a deep connection to the land and maintained a strong sense of community through storytelling, music, and traditional ceremonies.
Legal-Tender Native American Coins:
Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. To honour these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorised by each tribe.
The coins are also recognised by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.
One-Year-Only Designs Honour the Chiricahua Apache Culture.
The Coin Set:
The Apache Tribe Six-Piece Set features six different obverse designs depicting images important to Apache culture, tradition, and history.
The designs include a portrait of Geronimo a renowned Apache war chief and medicine man known for his fierce resistance against U.S. and Mexican forces during the Apache Wars.
Other designs include a coyote and prairie dogs.
The coyote was a significant figure in Apache culture associated with both positive and negative traits like cunning, mischief, and even wisdom, playing a key role in creation myths and often linked to hunting and warfare.
