Tribute To Shawnee Culture And History:
The Native American Mint’s coin sets honouring different tribes continues with the 2022 Shawnee Tribe Set.
The Shawnee Nation occupied much of the Ohio River Valley and was involved in every major war that took place in the Americas up until the War of 1812.
Known to be fierce warriors, the Shawnee lived in bark-covered houses during the summer and gathered in large villages were located near the fields where they cultivated corn and other vegetables. During the winter months they dispersed into family hunting camps.
Legal-Tender Native American Coins:
Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. To honour these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorised by each tribe.
The coins are also recognised by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.
One-Year-Only Design Honour Shawnee Culture:
The Coin Set:
The six Coin set includes the first issue Shawnee dollar. Legally authorised Coin set by the Shawnee Sovereign Nation designed by the tribe members.
The Shawnee Tribe Six-Piece Set features six different obverse designs depicting images important to Shawnee culture, tradition, and history like a snake warrior mask, harvested vegetables, a ceremonial tomahawk pipe, Chief Tecumseh, and the holy man Tenskwatawa. Perhaps the most unique coin is the 25-cent Curse of Tippecanoe coin.
According to legend, the “curse” avenges the Shawnees who lost their land in 1811 after they were defeated by forces led by Indiana Territorial Governor William Harrison at the Battle of Tippecanoe.
Nicknamed “Tippecanoe,” Harrison went on to win the 1840 Presidential Election only to soon die in office, giving rise to the superstition that U.S. Presidents elected in years ending in zero died in office.
This set of coins presents six different reverse designs featuring images important to the Shawnee culture.
Every coin is official Indian Sovereign Nations legal tender with a one-cent, five-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, 50-cent, and $1 coin.
