This Coin in the Native American Tribe Series, tells the story of how Devil’s Tower in present-day Wyoming was created.
The amazing igneous rock tower which rises 1,267 feet into the air is sacred to many Native American tribes, including the Arapahoe, Cheyenne, Crow, Kiowa, Lakota, and Shoshone.
The most famous creation story tells how a group of girls were playing when a giant bear appeared and began chasing them. The girls climbed to the top of a rock, where they prayed to be saved.
The rock rose high in the air, and the girls were saved while the bear left claw marks along the side of the mountain.
The rock rose higher and higher until the girls were pushed up into the sky, where they were turned into the “Seven Sisters” star cluster of the Pleiades.
The Lakota say that the deep crevices along the tower’s walls are the claw marks made long ago by the huge bear.
In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt named Devil’s Tower the country’s first national monument.
