This coin was the first of its kind! It represents the FIRST time a Native American tribe released a legal-tender coin in the United States! Issued by the Shawnee Nation, it’s no coincidence that the person selected to appear on it was none other than famed Shawnee Tribal Chieftain “Shooting Star”—better known as Tecumseh, one of the earliest Native American leaders ever to resist white encroachment on tribal lands.

Recognised By The Federal Government As Legal Tender: 

- Struck in a Troy ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, this legal-tender $1 coin was part of a series that was issued from 2002 to 2013.

 - This coin is recognized by the Federal Government as legal tender as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century. 

The razor-sharp design on the gleaming Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) coin shows the bust of Tecumseh along with the years of his life—1768 and 1813 and an inscription that reads, CHIEF “SHOOTING STAR” TECUMSEH.

The coin’s obverse shows the Coat of Arms for the Sovereign Nation of the Shawnee Tribe. 

Tecumseh’s Dreams Of An Independent Native American Nation: 

Tecumseh was a major chief of the Shawnee Nation in the late 18th Century and early 19th Century. 

A natural and charismatic leader, he participated in numerous conflicts on the frontier including the American Revolutionary War and the Northwest Indian War. 

Tecumseh grew wary of white colonists as they moved further West and developed a vision of an independent Native American nation under British protection east of the Mississippi River. 

He became an ally of Great Britain in the War of 1812 during what became known as Tecumseh’s War fought in Indiana Territory from 1811 to 1813. 

On October 5, 1813, American forces under the command of future President William H. Harrison defeated Tecumseh and his British allies in the Battle of the Thames, resulting in Tecumseh’s death and the end of his once-large tribal confederacy. 

Only 50,000 of these groundbreaking 2002 Shawnee Nation $1 One-Ounce Silver Tecumseh Coins were ever minted in Uncirculated condition and each one available here will come with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
