The Reserve Bank of New Zealand release new silver proof coins with an eye-catching colourful design. A traditional style of design featuring the Hammerhead shark is shown on the reverse. 

There is a proverb in common use by the indigenous Māori peoples of Aotearoa New Zealand, "Me mate ururoa, kei mate wheke – Die like a shark, not like an octopus". 

The proverb speaks to the tenacious qualities of the mangōpare/hammerhead shark and is used to describe people who give their absolute everything, physically, mentally and spiritually when undertaking a task of great importance. 

It is comparable to the English saying "Give it your absolute all, leave nothing to chance". For the Māori, the mangōpare design can be found as a very popular inclusion in tā moko or, traditional skin tattoos. It often depicts a notable ancestor in one’s whakapapa or, ancestry who exhibited the qualities of giving their all during their life. 

The mangōpare design can be found in use extensively within many sporting environments and in particular on sport apparel. In this context it is always spoken about as urging individuals and teams to give their all in the pursuit of excellence.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the pure silver $1 (One Dollar) Proof and Colour Coins have been minted by the Royal Dutch Mint at their facilities in Houten, Netherlands on behalf of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand. 

Designed by Dave Burke, he has illustrated the mangōpare surrounded by "mangopare kowhaiwhai patterns". 

The depiction style of the mangōpare is widely used across many different contexts and situations within the Māori world and wider Polynesian population. 

Above the primary design along the upper periphery is the text "MANGOPARE · HAMMERHEAD SHARK". 

The denomination of "ONE DOLLAR" is placed along the lower periphery. 

The coin has a proof finish with selective colours evoking the habitat of the shark. 

The Obverse of the pure silver $1 (One Dollar) Proof and Colour Coins depicts an effigy King Charles III created by Dan Thorne. 

The legend "CHARLES III NEW ZEALAND" appears on the outer periphery. The coins’ specifications ".999 Ag 1oz." is placed below.
