Among the great Native American leaders of 19th Century, few can match the accomplishments of Maȟpíya Lúta, a Lakota chief from the Oglala Tribe. 

Better known as Red Cloud, he was the first American Indian in the West to win a war against the United States. 

His victory in what has since been called “Red Cloud’s War” fought in the Wyoming and Montana territories from 1866 to 1868 forced U.S. authorities to abandon a series of newly constructed forts and compelled the U.S. government to sign the 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty guaranteeing the Lakota control of the Black Hills and much of South Dakota and Montana. 

Later, as the Lakota were forced onto reservations In 

the years following the Great Sioux War of 1876, Red 

Cloud continued to serve his people travelling to 

Washington, D.C., where he negotiated with officials 

and met with five different U.S. presidents over a 

period of 30 years. 

He eloquently criticised government Indian policy, asserted the authority of the chiefs, and cultivated contacts with eastern reformers. His legacy lives on today in the presence of Henry Red Cloud, a fifth-generation descendant of Red Cloud and the current Chief of the Oglala Lakota Tribe.
