3739) "Mustang Country", Canada: A 2 oz. Fine Silver
Coin minted by the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM): Date/Year of Coin issue: 02/2025:
The mustang is a free-roaming horse of the Western United
States, descended from horses brought to the Americas by the Spanish
conquistadors.
Mustangs are often referred to as wild horses, but
because they are descended from once-domesticated animals, they are actually
feral horses. The original mustangs were Colonial Spanish horses, but many
other breeds and types of horses contributed to the modern mustang, now
resulting in varying phenotypes.
Some free-roaming horses are relatively unchanged from
the original Spanish stock, most strongly represented in the most isolated
populations.
In 1971, the United States Congress recognised that
"wild free-roaming horses and burros are living symbols of the historic
and pioneer spirit of the West, which continue to contribute to the diversity
of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American
people."
The free-roaming horse population is managed and
protected by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM).
Controversy surrounds the sharing of land and resources
by mustangs with the livestock of the ranching industry, and also with the
methods by which the BLM manages their population numbers.
The most common method of population management used is
rounding up excess population and offering them to adoption by private
individuals.
There are inadequate numbers of adopters, so many once
free-roaming horses now live in temporary and long-term holding areas with
concerns that the animals may be sold for horse meat.
Additional debate centres
on the question of whether mustangs—and horses in general—are a native species
or an introduced invasive species in the lands they inhabit.
Mustang Country:
Mustangs are descended from horses brought to North America from Spain – in fact, “mustang” is derived from the Spanish words "mestengo/mesteño", meaning “masterless (stray) animal.”
Few images are more evocative of wide-open spaces, and of
unbridled freedom, as that of mustang herds roaming the prairie landscape.
The Reverse of the Gold and Silver Coins featuring a wild Mustang Herd.
This
is the scene so poignantly captured by Robert
Bateman in Mustang Country, reimagined here in 99.99% pure silver.
"Mustang Country" treats both its subject and the
grasslands with equal reverence; the same can be said for the engraved
rendition, which pays tribute to the artist’s photo-realistic details while
adding a bright silver lustre to the water’s reflective surface.
The Reverse of this $30 (Thirty Dollars) Silver Proof Coin features a wild Mustang Herd grazing and standing next to a water body.
The coin’s reverse features an engraved rendering of Mustang Country, an original painting by renowned Canadian wildlife artist Robert Bateman.
Set in the prairie grasslands, the scene shows the lead stallion of the mustang herd going down for a morning drink at a slough, where the horse is reflected in the still body of water.
The reverse includes the text “CANADA 2025”, the denomination of “30 DOLLARS”. The engraved signature of the designer Robert Bateman is towards the lower periphery.
The Obverse of the $30 (Thirty Dollars) Silver Proof Coin features an effigy of King Charles III facing left. The peripheral inscriptions are - "CHARLES III. D.G. REX." designed by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
Special features:
- The art shines in silver. Lighting plays a crucial role
in Bateman’s paintings, and on this coin, the polished lustre of 99.99% pure
silver adds a luminous quality to the water’s reflective surface.
- Larger-than-average coin size. The coin’s 50 mm diameter
provides ample space for the engraving to capture the spirit of the original
art and its many fine details.
- Low mintage. Just 4,000 coins are available to collectors
and art lovers worldwide. Also available in 99.99% pure gold.
The Specifications of this Silver Coin are:
Mintage: 4,000 pieces; Metal Composition: 99.99% pure silver; Weight: 62.69 g or 2.00 oz; Diameter/Size: 50.00 mm; Edge: Serrated; Denomination/Face Value: $30 (Thirty Dollars); Coin Quality/Finish: Proof (P); Packaging: Black clamshell with black beauty box; Designers: Robert Bateman (reverse), Steven Rosati (obverse).
