2025 Oglala Sioux $1 1-oz Silver Black Hawk  Proof: The Legend Of Black Hawk Lives On With This Dynamic Ultra High Relief (UHR) Coin:

Part of the highly popular Native Silver Dollar series, this coin’s design pays tribute to Black Hawk (1767–1838), a prominent leader of the Sauk and Fox tribes, and shows a detailed portrait of the famous warrior.

Long before such famous Native Americas as Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Geronimo captured the public’s attention, there was Black Hawk who led his people during the Black Hawk War of 1832 fought nearly 30 years before the start of the Civil War.

The Enduring Legacy Of Black Hawk’s Fighting

Spirit:

The Black Hawk War was sparked by the Indian Removal Act of 1830 which forced Native American tribes to relocate west of the Mississippi River.

Black Hawk, who had previously signed a treaty in 1804 ceding Sauk land, believed his people still held the right to their ancestral homeland in Illinois. In defiance of the treaty, he led a group of Sauk, Fox, and other allied tribes back to their land.

This led to a series of violent confrontations with the U.S. military and Illinois militia, culminating in the massacre at the Battle of Bad Axe, where many Native Americans were killed. The war ended with Black Hawk’s surrender and his subsequent imprisonment.

For Native Americans, Black Hawk is viewed as a courageous leader who fought to protect his people’s land and way of life

A symbol of resistance and resilience, Black Hawk’s story has been passed down through generations.

His name lives on in the ranks of the U.S. military where the Black Hawk” helicopter is named after him out of respect to his warrior spirit, agility, and fighting prowess.

The National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks got their name from the U.S. 86th Infantry Division, also known as the “Blackhawk Division,” which was named after the famed Native American chief.
