By the mid-1700s, Lakota Sioux Indians had crossed the Missouri River, acquired their first horses, and quickly established themselves as the iconic warrior horsemen of the Northern Plains

In the process of domesticating these wild horses, the Lakota also became the finest light cavalry in the world, extending their range and power across the Northern Plains as the dominant military force for hundreds of miles in every direction.
