3766) Annual UK Proof Coin Set, United Kingdom (UK): A Proof Coin Set of Seven Coins issued by The Royal Mint, UK: Date/Year of Coin set issue 1985: 

Since 1968, Arnold Machin’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II had featured on the Obverse of almost every UK Coin in circulation. 

In 1985, a new portrait - the third for Elizabeth II - was introduced. 

It was designed by Raphael Maklouf. While Maklouf had not previously designed coinage, he had created his own medallions and was adept at portraiture.

His design features the Queen facing right, in accordance with over three hundred years of tradition, wearing the Royal Diadem which is traditionally worn for the State opening of Parliament. 

Maklouf’s effigy was used until 1997 when a new design replaced it. 

This Annual Proof set from The Royal Mint for 1985 is a great way to collect all seven of the new designs for that year. 

The 1985 Collection/set of Coin issues by the Royal Mint UK:

Presented in the standard blue leatherette outer case with clear acrylic inner case, one can view and display both sides of the coins without handling them and risking damage. 

In this collection are a £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p, and 1p. 

The Five and Ten pence are in their old, larger format while the One Pound features a new design for this year. 

While the 1984 Pound coin was inspired by Scottish flora, this 1985 edition represents Wales, showing a leek within the Royal Diadem.

For the first time, this annual set did not include a Halfpenny which was withdrawn from circulation the previous year.

All seven coins in this collection are made from the same metal alloys as the coins in regular circulation, but are finished to a higher proof standard giving the designs greater definition, and an overall higher quality finish. 

They have the same dimensions and weights as standard too. One may find that some of the coinage in this set display evidence of toning. 

This is typical of these older collectors sets, several decades after they were issued.

Designs and Specifications: Each coin in this collection reflects, in part, the history of Britain:

Fifty Pence Coin: The first coin of any country to have this 7-sided shape. The design dhows the seated figure of Britannia, originally a symbol of Roman Britain, who has appeared on UK coinage for over 300 years. Struck in cupro-nickel, measures 30.00 mm and weighs 13.50g.

One Pound Coin: Representing  Wales, the second in the Series of four new reverse designs for the one pound coin shows a leek eradicated enfiling a representation of the Royal Diadem. Struck in nickel brass, it measures 22.50 mm and weighs 9.50g.

20 Pence Coin: A new denomination issued in 1982, this cupro-nickel coin features the Badge of England, a royally crowned double rose. Measures 21.40 mm and weighs 5.00g.

10 Pence Coin: Shows part of the Crest of England, a lion passant guardant royally crowned. Struck in cupro-niskel, measures 28.50 mm ane weighs 11.31g.

5 Pence Coin: Depicts the Badge of Scotland, which is a thistle royally crowned. Struck in cupro-nickel, measures 23.59 mm and weighs 5.65g.

2 Pence Coin: Features the Badge of the Prince of Wales with the motto "Ich Dien" (I serve). Struck in bronze, measures 25.91 mm and weighs 7.12g.

1 Penny Coin: Shows a portcullis with chains, royally crowned, which is an adaptation of a badge of Henry VII. Struck in bronze, measures 20.32 mm and weighs 3.56g.

- The one pound coin was designed by Leslie Durbin. The twenty pence coin was designed by William Gardner and the 50, 10, 5, 2 and 1 penny coins are the work of Christopher Ironside.

Common Obverse: The common obverse shows the ne effigy of Queen Elizabeth by Raphael Maklouf.

The Welsh 1 pound Coin:

Four new reverse design variants for the one pound coin were sauthorised by Royal Proclamation on 22 June 1983. This, the second in the series, features the national Emblem of Wales - the leek. Yhe proclamation describes the reserve design as "a Leek eradicated enfiling a representation of the Royal Diadem". The welsh edge inscription "PLEIKDIOL WYFI'M GWLAD, means "True am to my country".

The new portrait of Queen Elizabeth II:

The coins in this collection are the first to bear the new effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, by sculptor Raphael Maklouf, FRSA. This is only the third portrait of the Queen to be used on United Kingdom coinage since her accession in 1952.
