3792) Custer's Last Stand or The Battle of the Little Big Horn 2-pc Tribute Set, United States of America (USA): Year of Coins issue: 1829, 1865:
The Battle of the Little Bighorn, known to the Lakota and
other Plains Indians as the “Battle of the Greasy Grass”, and
commonly referred to as “Custer's Last Stand”, was an armed
engagement between combined forces of the Lakota Sioux, Northern
Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes and the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States
Army.
It took place on June 25–26, 1876, along the Little
Bighorn River in the Crow Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana Territory.
The battle, which resulted in the defeat of U.S. forces, was the most
significant action of the Great Sioux War of 1876.
Most battles in the Great Sioux War, including the Battle
of the Little Bighorn, were on lands those natives had taken from other tribes
since 1851.
The fight was an overwhelming victory for the
Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho, who were led by several major
war leaders, including Crazy Horse and Chief Gall, and had been inspired by the
visions of Sitting Bull (Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake).
The U.S. 7th Cavalry, a force of 700 men, commanded by
Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer (a brevetted major general during
the American Civil War), suffered a major defeat.
Five of the 7th Cavalry's twelve companies were wiped
out, and Custer was killed, as were two of his brothers, his nephew, and his
brother-in-law.
The total U.S. casualty count included 268 dead and 55
severely wounded (6 died later from their wounds, 244 including
4 Crow Indian scouts and at least 2 Arikara Indian scouts.
Public response to the Great Sioux War varied in the
immediate aftermath of the battle. Custer's widow Libbie Custer soon worked to
burnish her husband's memory and during the following decades, Custer and his
troops came to be considered heroic figures in American history. The battle and
Custer's actions in particular have been studied extensively by historians.
By the 1930s Custer's heroic public image began to
tarnish after the death of Elizabeth Bacon (Libby) Custer in 1933 at the age of
90 and the publication of “Glory Hunter - The Life of General Custer” by
Frederic F. Van de Water, which was the first book to depict Custer in unheroic
terms. The timing of both instances, combined with the cynicism of an economic
depression and historical revisionism, led to a more jaded view of Custer and
his defeat on the banks of the Little Bighorn River.
More on the Battle of Little Big Horn - A summary:
While most of the nation was gearing up for its
Centennial Celebration in the summer of 1876, the greatest fight of the Indian
Wars was taking place alongside a lazy stretch of river known to Native
Americans as the "Greasy Grass".
Remembered today as the Battle of the Little Big
Horn, the fight on June 25-26 pitted warriors of the Lakota Sioux, Northern
Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes led by Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull against
troopers of the United States Army’s famed 7th Cavalry Regiment serving under
Lt. Col. George Armstrong Custer – the celebrated “Boy General” of the Civil
War.
The news of the battle was shocking: The regiment was
decimated, Custer and several members of his immediate family were killed and
the resulting summer-long “Great Sioux War” ultimately saw the tribes of the
Northern Great Plains surrender to the harsh reality of the reservation,
changing their way of life forever.
Following the fight – and for many years after – a
variety of relics were discovered on the battlefield including bullets, shell
casings, belt buckles and even a trooper’s full skeleton that was revealed
after a prairie fire wiped the battlefield clean.

Custer's Last Stand - Coins presented against a scene of the Battle of Little Big Horn.
Custer's last stand - the description reads:
"When the troopers of the U.S. 7th Cavsalry rode to their date with destin y along the Banks of the Little Big Horn River in Montana, they carried with them pocket change. Days after Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and more thsan 200 men under his immediate command were massacred by Lakota and Cheyenne warriors, the sur viving men of the regiment searched the battlefield.
All they found were corpses, shell-casings, and coins like the 18645 Copper Two-Cent piece and 1807=1839 Silver Bust Half Dollar.
The two-coin set pays tribute to both the troopers who served their country and the Native Americans who bravely defended their homeland."
Among the most prized objects
retrieved were a Two Cent piece and Bust Half Dollar. Those two coins – a sum
total of 52 cents – sold at an auction recently for $2,375!
This tribute set brings together a vintage example of
each coin type: A genuine Two-Cent copper piece struck in 1865 and an 1807-1839
Bust Half Dollar struck in 90% fine silver.
Each comes in good condition
meaning they actually circulated in commerce and still retain their designs.
Who knows, maybe these coins sat in the saddlebags of a 7th Cavalry Trooper and
were spent on his last leave before heading out to the Plains to meet his
destiny.
Each two-piece set will come displayed in a
custom-designed insert card and housed in a 3" x 5" clear acrylic
holder for optimal viewing. You’ll also receive an informative storycard that
provides details about the famous battle.
As an added bonus, the collector also
receives a special gold-coloured 100th Anniversary Dakota Territory Medal issued
in 1961 that displays none other than George Armstrong Custer himself, a
fitting design since the 7th cavalry was based out of Fort Abraham Lincoln near
Bismarck in Dakota Territory.
At 34 mm in diameter, this brass token is larger
than a half dollar.
It is a great way to share this important story
from Wild West history with the actual money that circulated during that time.
