1083) British Mandate Banknote Series, Israel: Israel Coins and Medals Corporation (ICMC) has brought out Silver .999 Replicas of 5, 10, 50 and 100 Pounds and 500 Mils issued under this series which circulated from 1927-1948:
Britain captured the Land of Israel (Eretz) - Palestine as it was then called from the Ottoman Empire in 1917, after which British military occupation over the land began.
In 1926, the British Mandate set up the "Palestine Currency Board" which was tasked with the overall responsibility for Currency policies and issuance responsibilities within the Mandate territories.
In 1927, the Board circulated/issued Banknotes which served as legal tender even ater the mandatory period, when the State of Israel was established.
In deference to the religious sentiments of all three major religions in the country, the Banknotes were decorated with symbols and sites of significance to the Jews, Christians and Muslims - the "Tomb of Rachel", "Dome of the Rock" and "White Tower".
The Back of the Banknote depicted a picture of the "Tower of David" - a symbol of Jerusalem for all three religions.
These Banknotes remained in circulation until 18.08.1948, when they were exchanged for the "Anglo-Palestine" Banknotes.
Israel Coins and Medals Corp. has brought out this unique series, which will be the first of several series which will represent the historical Banknotes, which were once in circulation in Israel.
