1433) Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), Niue: First Silver Coin with a denominational value of 1 NZD (One New Zealand Dollar) in "Geniuses of the 19th Century Coin Series" minted by the Czech Mint on behalf of Niue: Date of Coin issue: 01/2020:
The Nineteenth Century was not only a century of steam, but also eccentric and brilliant inventors.
Today's advanced technology, without which we cannot imagine our comfortable lives, was found thanks to them.
Geniuses of the Nineteenth-century, who invented ground-breaking novelties in their loneliness of their offices, workshops and laboratories, pushed the boundaries of the human race and changed the future of generations for the better.
Each of these pioneers was a peculiar personality with his own goals, but they had one thing in common - their success was the result of a steady, stubborn effort ......
The following inventors are included in this four part mini-series of Silver Coins:
- Thomas Alva Edison
- Nikola Tesla
- Alfred Bernhard Nobel
- Alexander Graham Bell
The Czech Mint introduced Thomas Alva Edison as the first inventor on the Silver Coin in the "Geniuses of the 19th Century Coin Series":
The man who lit the world and filled it with music has received over a thousand patents (1093 US patents) in his life. He was a great businessman and built his own empire, unlike his contemporaries who ended in oblivion.

Edison was constantly under-estimated. When he was born, the doctor was convinced that he would not survive and when he started going to school, the teacher considered him to be a fool.
But, Edison was extremely inquiring and emterprising. He liked experiments with chemicals and published his own newspaper when he was just 14 years old.
He made his editorial office in a railway carriage at the station to be the source of his information. However, the wagon was destroyed by fire during one of his chemical experiments and the conductor beat him to the point that he almost became deaf for the rest of his life. The newspaper was over, but Edison found a telegraph at the station.
He became a telegraphist and became interested in electricity.
Soon he came up with his first invention - an electronic voting machine.
Other revolutionary patents followed. It is a paradox that the almost deaf Edison invented the first sound recorder - a phonograph - and also a carbon microphone - without which the phone of A.G. Bell would never have succeeded.
Despite popular belief, Edison did not invent the bulb, but improved it to last for fifty hours and even a thousand years later.
This was followed by a dynamo, then a first power station, a cinematograph.
Critics say that Edison appropriated the credit of inventors working in the laboratories and plants he built, but in reality, these hard workers would have probably never realised their ideas without Edison's resources.
Edison divided the development process into sub-tasks performed by many persons. His assistants had a stable financial background and cound continue experimenting because more patents were created in the same time.
Though Edison was far from flawless, he was respected, which was evidenced by the fact that all the bulbs in America went out on the day of his funeral.
In his words - "Genius is one percent inspiration - 99% perspiration", (in response to a question about his prolific ability to patent his inventions).
The Commemorative Coin:
The Czech Mint has minted these coins at its facilities in Prague on behalf of the Treasury of Niue:
The Reverse of the 1 NZD (One New Zealand Dollar Silver Coin depicts Edison's portrait in an advanced age together with the inscription "T.A.EDISON" (in the vertical direction).
The composition is supplemented by a part of the technical diagram of the phonograph and a depiction of Edison speaking into and a sketch motif of the technical model of the invention.
The Obverse of the 1 NZD (One New Zealand Dollar Silver Coin bears graphic drawings/representations of various inventions of the 19th Century.
An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right is seen on this face. The inscriptions are - "1 DOLLAR. NIUE ISLAND. ELIZABETH II. 2020".
The Presentation Case for a single Coin together with the Certificate of Authenticity (COA).
Since the Czech Mint issues the coins with a foreign license of the island of Niue, they bear the name and portrait of Queen Elizabeth II and the nominal value of 1 NZD and the year of issue "2020".
One can also store the four coins dedicated to brilliant inventors in a special collector's box, offered by the Czech Mint.
The specifications of this Silver Coin are:
