1895) "Experience Nature" - the Duin en Kruidberg Nature Reserve, Netherlands: A set of stamps issue by PostNL (Netherlands Post) depicting fruits and animals from theNature Reserve:Date of Stamp Set issued: 14.06.2021":
About the Duin en Kruidberg Nature Reserve:
The Duin en Kruidberg Nature Reserve is located in Zuid-Kennemerland National Park in the province of Noord-Holland.
This extensive dune area used to be owned by the Lords of Brederode, the most powerful family in this part of the coastal region in the Middle Ages.
The area where Duin en Kruidberg now lies, west of the villages of Driehuis and Santpoort, was called "the Wilderness" back then. It consisted of undeveloped wasteland and sand-covered farmland on beach ridges from the early Middle Ages.
The present Duin en Kruidberg, together with Midden-Herenduin and Heerenduinen, was the last dune property of the heirs of the Lords of Brederode until the 19th century.
The name Duin and Kruidberg only dates from the beginning of the 20th century and is a combination of the names of two older farms: Duin en Berg and De Kruidberg.
Duin en Kruidberg is currently owned by Natuurmonumenten. The dune area is part of Zuid-Kennemerland National Park.
Nature has now replaced the former inhabitants. Bats now hibernate in the ice house and the tree-lined avenues and verges are full of spring flowers.
Shetland ponies, Scottish highland cattle and Konik horses graze.
In the wet valleys, rare plants such as grass of Parnassus, Gentiana and Centaurium bloom in summer.
