4124) Artefacts, Germania Mint: Mjolnir, the hammer of the Thunder God Thor - The Germania Mint has issued a 10 Mark Silver  coin featuring the legendary hammer which is a key symbol in Germanic mythology: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2025:

ARTEFACTS:

Discover a fascinating collection of magical items that enabled Germanic heroes to draw upon their supernatural powers, shaping the course of the world. The artefacts selected by Germania Mint played a fundamental role in the most important stories of mighty gods, epic battles, and mysterious mythical creatures.

These objects not only symbolise power and dominion over the forces of chaos but also serve as tools for vanquishing enemies and protecting what is most valuable. Each artefact carries its own unique meaning and purpose, deeply rooted in the rich context of Germanic mythology.

Some were used to ensure victory in battle, while others provided supernatural protection in the most challenging moments.

With this series, one can step into a world filled with magic and immense power, where every object holds the potential to change the course of events, giving the stories of gods and heroes a new dimension.

Mjölnir is the hammer of the thunder god Thor in Norse mythology, used both as a devastating weapon and as a divine instrument to provide blessings:

The hammer is attested in numerous sources, including the 11th century runic Kvinneby amulet, the Poetic Edda, a collection of eddic poetry compiled in the 13th century, and the Prose Edda, a collection of prose and poetry compiled in the 13th century

The hammer was commonly worn as a pendant during the Viking Age in the Scandinavian cultural sphere, and Thor and his hammer occur depicted on a variety of objects from the archaeological record.

Today the symbol appears in a wide variety of media and is again worn as a pendant by various groups, including adherents of modern Heathenry.

The Kvinneby amulet:

Worn around the neck, the Kvinneby amulet is a small copper amulet found in Öland, Sweden that dates from the 11th century and features an Old Norse Younger futhark inscription that invokes Thor and his hammer. Runologists Mindy MacLeod and Bernard Mees translate the amulet as follows:

'Here I carve for you (runes of) help, Bofi.

Help me! Knowledge is certain for you.

And may the lightning hold all evil away from Bofi.

May Thor protect him with his hammer which came from out of the sea.

Flee from evil! It gets nothing from Bofi.

The gods are under him and over him.'

The amulet inscription references narratives recorded hundreds of years later in both the Poetic Edda and Prose Edda.

Poetic Edda:

In the Poetic Edda, Mjölnir is mentioned in the eddic poems Vafþrúðnismál, Hymiskviða, Lokasenna, and Þrymskviða. In a stanza from Vafþrúðnismál, the wise jötunn Vafþrúðnir tells the disguised god Odin that after the events of Ragnarök, Móði and Magni, sons of Thor, will wield Mjölnir.

The Silver Coin:

The Artefacts series continues with its second release - Mjölnir, the mythical hammer of Thor. Forged by the dwarves Sindri and Brokk, it struck with boundless force, always returning to Thor’s hand.

More than a weapon, it became the symbol of Asgard’s protection and divine power.

Following the unique concept of the Artefacts collection, the obverse and reverse together depict both sides of the legendary hammer, creating the impression of a three-dimensional relic sealed in silver. Adorned with runes and surrounded by lightning, Mjölnir embodies the might of Thor and the spirit of Germanic legend.

The coin depicts key stories related to Ragnarök, the mythical end of the world.

On the Reverse of the 10 Mark Coin, one  can see the Mjolnir, Thor's hammer. The insignia of the Germania mint is at bottom right.

Lightning and Thunderous clouds complete the depiction if the Hammer of the God of Thunder.

The Obverse of the 10 Mark Coin features selected elements of the Coin which have been ennobled with gold, allowing for even greater detail in the design.

Designed by Mateusz Frąckowiak, this coin is issued in a limited edition of 500 pieces and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity (COA)

It is presented in a lens capsule and housed in a Wooden box with engraving.
