4271) The Maltese Ox, Malta: A 10 Euro High Relief 2-oz Silver BU Coin with Ruthenium plating, depicts the head of a Maltese Ox: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2025:
Description:
The Germania Mint, in collaboration with the Central Bank of Malta, has produced a stunning collector’s edition featuring the Maltese ox, ‘il-gendus Malti’, which is a native cattle breed.
Traditionally reared as a working animal, the Maltese ox was brought on the verge of extinction. Although saved thanks to a back-breeding process, the Maltese cattle breed is still considered to be endangered.
The Maltese Ox is a species of cow native to the Maltese islands:
The etchings of bulls on some of the masonry in local prehistoric temples provide proof that the Maltese native cow is a species that dates back to the prehistoric age.
The domesticated Maltese cow served as a source of muscle power rather than food. They are extremely thin and fat-free, therefore not good for the meat industry but provided the necessary power to carry large objects and plow fields when tractors and modern machinery weren’t available.
They played a key role in the construction of the nearby churches and temples. These animals are really peaceful, quiet and really resistant to the sun, which comes in abundance in Malta.
Designed by Germania Mint's Natalia Danysz, the coin retains the iconic Maltese motifs and shape of prior coin releases, reimaged with fresh artistic flair. The coin depicts the head of a Maltese ox surrounded with swirling wind lines, evoking dynamic motion and the beast’s strength.
