The Bank al-Maghrib has issued a 250 Durham Silver Proof Coin to mark the conduct of the 35th AFCON tournament in Morocco.
The Header/Banner showcases the re-built Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex features on the Reverse, while the Obverse features an effigy on King Mohammed VI facing left.
The Africa Cup of Nations is the main biennial international men's association football competition in Africa.
In 2025, Morocco hosted the 35th Africa Cup of Nations which began on the 21st December and with matches taking place across several cities in the Kingdom.
It is the first time that the tournament is being played over the Christmas and New Year period, and the second time Morocco is hosting, the first being in 1988.
Sanctioned by the Confederation of African Football – CAF, the tournament was first held in 1957 and since 1968 it has been held every two years, switching to odd-numbered years since 2013.
It was announced on the 20th December the tournament will be staged every four years instead of biennially.
As such, the next Africa Cup of Nations finals scheduled for 2027 in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda will go ahead and then another tournament will be held in 2028, after that it will be hosted every four years on each Leap year.
For 2025, a total of 54 teams were eligible to compete, and 24 national teams made it to the finals. From the 21st December to the 18th January, 28 matches will be played with the final match scheduled to be held at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, Rabat. With a seating capacity of 69,500, the venue opened on the 5th September 2025 and is now the home stadium of Morocco national football team.
The coins have been minted by the Dar As-Sikkah minting facilities in Rabat on behalf of the Bank Al-Maghrib.
The Reverse of the 250 Dirham Silver Proof Coin features a stylised and centred image of the new Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.
Above the stadium is a map of the African continent accompanied with colour celebratory fireworks in honour of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Along the right periphery above the primary design is the commemorative text - "MOROCCO 2025 المغرب". The denomination "امهرد نوسمخ و ناتئام 250" ("Two hundred Fifty Dinars") is seen just along the lower left periphery.
The Obverse of the 250 Dirham Silver Proof Coin includes an effigy of King Mohammed VI introduced onto Moroccan coinage in 2002.
On the left of the effigy along the periphery is the text shown in the Berber Tifinagh script - "ⵜⴰⴳⵍⴷⵉⵜ ⵏ ⵍⵎⵖⵔⵉⴱ" ("Kingdom of Morocco") and to the right is text shown in Arabic "المملكة المغربية" ("Kingdom of Morocco").
Under the King’s effigy is the stylised Arabic text - "محمد السادس بن الحسن"
("Mohammed VI Bin Al Hassan"). The years "1447" (Islamic) and "2025" (Gregorian) are
also included in the legend.
