1451) Master Watchmakers of the Isle of Man: A set of Six Stamps issued by Isle of Man Post Office celebrating three world renowned watchmakers: Date of Stamp set issue: 11.08.2020:

The Isle of Man is home to the producers of some of the finest watches and timepieces in the world.

The header/banner is titled "Master Watchmakers of the Isle of Man".

This beautiful set of six stamps  acknowledges the Isle of Man's contribution to watchmaking by displaying several iconic timepieces alongside their inventors, symbolising the Island's significant impact on the world of horology.

The Presentation Pack includes descriptions of the Stamp issue and six stamps issued in the set.

Produced by Isle of Man Advertising and informed by Alistair Audsley (producer of the film - "The Watchmaker's Apprentice"), this set of six stamps displays both the watchmakers and their most famous, significant and iconic contribution to the world of horology.

From John Harwood to Dr. Roger W Smith OBE, to George Daniels - considered by many to be one of the finest watchmakers of all time, the Island has been the home and inspiration to many significant figures in the industry.

The watchmakers and clockmakers from the British Isles have contributed to the vast majority of inventions which allow users to keep time. In fact more than 75% of all the inventions which make present day wrist-watches function in the most convenient and accurate way are British and the Isle of Man played an important role in that discovery.

During 2013, Roger W. Smith a master watchmaker from the Isle of Man was made an Ambassador for the "GREAT Britain" campaign, representing the best of British innovation, technology and creativity. To celebrate these values, Roger created the now iconic "GREAT Britain" watch which is represented on this remarkable set of stamps.

Each of these intricately detailed stamps feature a gold metallic ink to luxuriously highlight the sense of craftsman-made jewellery.

The Stamps Set:

The six Stamps issued in the Set

The First Day Cover (FDC) is titled "Master Watchmakers - of the Isle of Man".

The FDC has all six Stamps issued in the set affixed on top. The Cancellation is of IOM Post and is dated - "11.08.2020".

The individual Stamps:

John Harwood - 62p Stamp:

This stamp displays John Harwood, inventor of the self-winding watch, utilising kinetic energy to produce the first self-winding wrist-watch.

Harwood, who is pictured next to his 1929 watch "The Automatic", produced this piece in his workshop on the Isle of Man though his innovations found homes with Fortis and Omega.

George Daniels "The Grand Complication" - 94p Stamp:

"George Daniels CBE, DSc,  FSA, AHCI was an English horologist who was considered to be the best in the world during his lifetime. He was one of the few modern watchmakers, who built complete watches by hand. But it was his creation of the coaxial escapement for which he is most remembered.

George Daniels "Space Traveller" - 1.17 Pounds Stamp:

The second stamp featuring George Daniels, introduces him working on a timepiece by hand, with his "Space Traveller" watch in the background. Acknowledged as one of Daniels' finest works, the watch displayed sold for over 3.0 million pounds in 2017.

This hand built watch featured coaxial escapement, improving the performance of mechanical watches - a feature which is now found in many modern watches, such as those of Omega.

George Daniels "The Blue" 1.40 Pounds Stamp:

"The Blue" was released as a four piece collection by Daniels and signifies an important place in the history of his works and horological career.

The stamp shares imagery of both the watch and its production, displaying Daniels with his apprentice -Roger W. Smith.

Roger W. Smith "The GREAT Britain II" 1.58 Pounds Stamp:

This Stamp pictures a close up image ofone of Smith's greatest creations. Named the "GREAT Britain II", this watch represents the greatest single step forward for mechanical watch technology in the modern era.

Smith notes that this watch features perhaps the most complex dial ever made by hand and a movement which is one-of-a-kind.

Roger W. Smith "The GREAT BRITAIN" 2.37 Pounds

This Stamp pictures Roger W. Smith as he works meticulously on "The GREAT Britain" watch.

Smith moved to the Isle of Man to work alongside Daniels as his apprentice, where his workshop remains even today, situated in Ramsey, Isle of Man.

A four page glossy full colour booklet showcases the three remarkable master watchmakers who are inextricably linked to the Isle of Man. The booklet contains all six stamps in mint condition.

Prestige Booklet:

This 28-page Prestige Booklet explores the life and works of the three remarkable watchmakers who are inextricably linked to the Isle of Man.

Dr. Roger  W. Smith OBE has given the text, describing his magnificent contribution to horology, along with that of John Harwood and Dr. George Daniels whose masterpieces feature in the collection.

Inside the Prestige Booklet are two complete sets of the Master Watchmakers of the Isle of Man Stamps.

They feature intricate designs utilising eye-catching  photography, and are finished with gold metallic ink to add to the visual effect and evoke the sense of craftsman-made jewellery.
