"This Uncirculated collection of 1983 dated United Kingdom Coinage includes the historic one pound coin, which is the latest addition to the Nation's range of circulation coins. The Prince of Wales visited the Royal Mint and struck the very first one pound coin. Appropriately, the Reverse depicts the Royal Coat of arms whose origin can be traced many centuries.

This inner page of the coin album gives a brief description of -"STRIKING COINS AT THE ROYAL MINT" (in 1983):
" Combining metals to create an alloy is the first step in the process of minting United Kingdom coins. The metal used for each denomination is produced as a continuous strip directly from the furnace. The stripis rolled under pressure to the requisite coin thickness and blanks are then punched out of the strip and annealed, that is softened by heating, and then washed and dried before they are passed to the coining press.
A reducing machine copies the artist's model to acoin sized punch which is then used in the production working dies. The dies are placed in the coining press and the blank is struck under great pressure, sometimes up to 110 tons, which imparts the design to both sides at once.
The coins are subsequently counted, weighed and bagged in preparation for despatch to Banks.
Throughout the entire minting process, great care is taken to ensure that the Royal Mint's reputation for quality is maintained.
Formerly accommodated at The Tower of London, later at Tower Hill, the Royal Mint is now situated at Llantrisant in South Wales.

1) One Pound Coin: Shows the Royal Coat of Arms and is struck in nickel-brass. It measures 22.50 mm in diameter and weight 9.50 grams.
2) 50 Pence Coin: The first coin of any country to have this 7-sided shape. The design shows the seated figure of Britannia, originally a symbol of Roman, who has appeared on UK coinage for over 300 years. Struck in cupro-nickel, measures 30.00 mm and weighs 13.50 grams.
3) 20 Pence Coin: A new denomination issued in 1982, this cupro-nickel coin features the Badge of England, a royally crowned double rose. Measures 21.40 mm and weighs 5.00 grams.
4) 10 Pence Coin: Shows part of the Crest of England, a lion passant guardant royally crowned. Struck in cupro-nickel, measures 28.50 mm and weighs 11.31 grams.
5) 5 Pence Coin: Depicts the Badge of Scotland, which is a thistle royally crowned. Struck in cupro-nickel, measures 23.59mm and weighs 5.65 grams.
6) 2 Pence Coin: Features the Badge of the Prince of Wales with the motto "Ich Dien" (I serve). Struck in bronze, measures 25.91 mm and weighs 7.12 grams.
7) One Penny Coin: Shows a portcullis with chains, royally crowned, which is an adaptation of a badge of Henry VII. Struck in bronze, measures 20.32 mmand weighs 3.56 grams.
8) Half Penny Coin: Shows the Royal Crown. Measures 17.14 mm and weighs 1.78 grams. It is struck in bronze.
Designers: The one pound coin was designed by Eric Sewell, a former Chief Engraver at the royal Mint.
The twenty-pence coin was designed by William Gardner and the 50, 10, 5, 2, 1 and 1/2 penny coins are the work of Christopher Ironside.
