4063) "80th Anniversary of Liberation and Founding of the Nation of South Korea": Two 70,000 Won Silver Proof Coins Mark the milestone: Coins minted by the Korea Minting and Security Printing Corporation (KOMSCO) on behalf of the Bank of Korea: Date/Year of Coin issue: 11.08.2025:
The Bank of Korea has released commemorative coins marking the 80th Anniversary of Liberation.
In 1945, the Korean peninsula was liberated after 35 years of colonial rule from Japan and along with liberation, the Republic of Korea – present-day South Korea was also founded.
The National Liberation Day of Korea is a public holiday celebrated annually on the 15th August which commemorates the day when Korean Peninsula was liberated by Allied forces in 1945 from 35 years of Japanese colonial rule.
The Korean Empire was a monarchical state proclaimed in October 1897 by King Gojong of the Joseon dynasty.
The empire lasted until the Japanese annexation of Korea in August 1910. It was the first time that the Korean Peninsula had come under control by a foreign power. For the next 35 years, Imperial Japanese rule and occupation oversaw the attempt at eradicating the Korean culture and language.
The Imperial Japanese government surrendered unconditionally to Allied forces on the 15th August following the use of atomic weapons on the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 6th and 9th August.
It is this day in particular that is celebrated as both the day of liberation and the establishment of the Republic of Korea.
On the 1st September a provisional Korean government agreed on the release of all prisoners and the transfer of administrative and judicial control to Korean authorities in return for the guarantee of safe passage for Japanese citizens back to Japan.
The last Japanese occupation troops departed southern Korea at the end of September 1945 while at the same time, United States troops landed in mid-September and occupied the southern part of the country.
The United States and the former Soviet Union agreed on a 3-year trusteeship during which they would oversee the establishment of two different national governments for Korea.
By 1950, the two governments of Korea ultimately began fighting for supremacy with the northern half supported by the new communist state of China and the south supported by the United States.
The war came to an end in June 1953 without a formal peace agreement and both sides agreeing to the border on the 38th parallel initially established as a military demarcation line at the end of World War II.
