4050) 80 Years of Territorial Amendment, Republic of Poland: 10 Złotych Square-Shaped Silver Proof Coins Mark the milestone: Date/Year of coin issue: July 2025:
The National Bank of Poland release new silver coins remembering Post-War national borders.
The Header presents the reverse side illustrates the current borders of the Polish Republic. It was during the conferences in Tehran, Yalta and Potsdam that the three allied powers agreed to the changes of the borders of several Central European countries.
The most significant of these changes resulted from the consent of the United States and the United Kingdom for the Soviet Union to retain most of its territories it had seized from Poland by attacking the country in September 1939, sixteen days after the invasion of the Third Reich.
As compensation for almost half of the area of pre-war Poland seized by the former USSR, Poland was granted lands that had belonged to the Third Reich before World War II.
However, the newly acquired lands were smaller in area of the seized lands in the East by about one-fifth. With the conclusion of the war with the unconditional surrender of Germany in May 1945, the victorious powers believed it would be unacceptable to leave within Poland's new designated borders with large numbers of German nationals.
Many of which were responsible for some of the greatest amounts of looting, destruction and deliberate crimes in history - in particular, for the deaths of about 6 million citizens of the Republic of Poland, including almost 3 million citizens of Jewish heritage.
For these reasons, all those persons of German heritage were expelled not only from the new areas designated to Poland in the west but, from the entire territory of Poland.
In their place, Poles expelled from eastern territory annexed by the former USSR were moved to the new lands in the West.
Since 1945, Poland's borders in the West have run along the Oder and the Lusatian Neisse, and in the north along the Baltic coast, just as in the times of the first Piast rulers.
Thus, Warmia, Gdańsk, the Babimost and Piła lands, as well as, other territories seized by Prussia as a result of the partitions in the 19th centuries, and which the Second Republic was unable to regain, returned to Poland.
A part of Silesia – especially the part most affected by the fighting of the Third Silesian Uprising – and the former lands of Ducal Prussia, which had been a Polish fiefdom for centuries, were also included within the borders of Post-World War II Poland.
Lower Silesia, the Lubusz Land and Western Pomerania with Szczecin returned after centuries of repeated changes of statehood. The Western and Northern Territories were among the most devastated and plundered areas of Europe.
Despite unimaginable human losses – proportionally the greatest of all nations who fought in World War II – the Polish nation managed to rebuild this almost one third of the country's territory, restoring life and development to the devastated regions.
Today, all of this territory remains as part of internationally recognised borders and is included in the Polish Republic whose democratic principles were re-established in 1989 and which joined the European Union and NATO in 2004.
Designed by artist Grzegorz Pfeifer, the Reverse side of the 10 Złotych Silver Coin features a stylised contemporary map of Poland edged with a ribbon in the national colours colours of the Republic.
- On the left is a recreated the image of the Royal Eagle of King Przemysł II the 11th century ruler who crowned himself King of Poland in 1295, and on the right is the inscription "80 ROCZNICA POWROTU POLSKI NA ZIEMIE ZACHODNIE I PÓŁNOCNE" ("80th anniversary of Poland’s return to the Western and Northern territories").
The Obverse side of the 10 Złotych Silver Coin features the same map image of Poland’s present territory along with the crowned Eagle established as the state emblem of the Republic of Poland.
The face value of 10 Zł is placed near the lower left corner and the text "RZECZPOSPOLITA POLSKA" ("Republic of Poland") is shown along the lower rim.
