4076) "Steam Giants" - Vintage Steam-Era Rail Travel Across the Continent, Australia: A Seven 50 Cents Cupro-nickel Coin Set highlights the Age of Steam era Railway Engines: Date/Year of Coin set issue: 07.08.2025:
The Royal Australian Mint (RAM) has released a set of
commemorative coins titled - "Steam Giants".
The Header/Banner presents all seven Reverse designs featuring different steam engine
locomotives against a background representation of an actual Steam locomotive.
In a bygone era, steam and steel came together to create
Australia’s vivid legacy of steam-powered rail travel, an innovation that
connected a nation and forged its identity.
The "Steam Giants" - Australian Rail
Heritage collection captures the might of Australia’s largest and most iconic
steam locomotives, each chosen to represent a different state.
Australian steam-powered rail travel began with the
opening of the first steam railway line in Melbourne in 1854.
This line, built
by the Melbourne and Hobson's Bay Railway Company, ran from Flinders Street
Station to Sandridge – renamed Port Melbourne.
Steam locomotives quickly
replaced horse-drawn carriages, becoming integral to transporting goods and
people with the network soon expanded throughout the country.
Steam trains were
used for various purposes including commuting, transporting livestock and crops.
Rail transport was especially important as it contributed significantly to
Australia's development during the gold rush and beyond.
As investment
increased and settlements expanded, new lines were rapidly built connecting
major cities and regional centres which contributed to Australia's economic
growth and increase in Europeans looking to settle in Australia.
Trains brought a sense of connection for towns and
settlements in the bush to larger cities which lessened the feeling of
remoteness and isolation.
The schedules and timetables were usually quite
punctual, lending a certain sense of rhythm and reliability to communities.
The
development and operation of steam locomotives in Australia involved
significant engineering efforts, including the construction of tracks, bridges
and the locomotives themselves.
The completion of the Trans-Australian Railway
in 1917, connecting Port Augusta in South Australia and Kalgoorlie in Western
Australia marked the completion of a coast-to-coast rail service across
Australia.
Stretching across 1,693 kilometres of Australia’s driest and most
isolated terrain,
It took five years for teams of rail workers to lay the 2.5
million hardwood sleepers and 140,000 tonnes of rail needed to finish the
1,693-kilometre job. This railway significantly improved east-west travel and
communication across the continent.
During this era, and among the giants that were part of
the transport network was South Australia Railway’s No. 520 ‘Sir Malcolm
Barclay-Harvey’, which ran alongside the Flying Scotsman during its 1989
Australian tour — a historic meeting of international legends.
Rail travel
shaped and changed the lives of ordinary people in the country and one great
story of life in the rail yards is that of a 15-year-old Bathurst boy.
He
started on the railways as a shop boy and by 18 he was a fireman, feeding coal
into steam engines.
At 27, he became a locomotive driver steering his trains
through some of the most challenging routes and terrain in the country.
That
young driver was Joseph Benedict or, Ben Chifley, who would later become
Australia’s 16th Prime Minister, serving from 1945 to 1949.
By the 1950s, steam
locomotives were gradually replaced by diesel-electric locomotives, marking the
end of an era, but not the end of the fascination many still have with rail
travel.
Some steam trains, like "Puffing Billy", have been preserved and are now
tourist attractions, allowing people to experience the nostalgia and history of
steam rail travel.
The Coins:
- Designed by a collaborative team of artisans at the Royal
Australian Mint (RAM) with intricate engraving and vibrant colour, the coins reflect
the power and personality of these engineering marvels, many of which still
inspire railway enthusiasts across the country.
The set includes seven designs,
one representing each state and territory –
· AD60 Class Beyer-Garratt 6029 - New South Wales. The
largest operating steam locomotive in the Southern Hemisphere.
· No. 1009 Beyer-Garratt – Queensland. A survivor of the
tropics, known for its bold red and yellow livery.
· SAR 520 Class No. 520 – South Australia. A streamlined
wartime passenger engine under passionate restoration.
· G Class G1 - Commonwealth Railways. Pioneer of the
Trans-Australian Railway across the Nullarbor desert.
· Q Class Q5 – Tasmania. Tasmania’s last ‘Mountain’
locomotive.
· H220 ‘Heavy Harry’ – Victoria. Australia’s largest
non-articulated steam engine, a freight legend.
· V Class V1220 – Western Australia. Built to help
rejuvenate the Western Australian Railways after the Second World War.
