4080) The History of Ship-Building in  Jersey, a British Crown Dependency (BCD), a Channel Island: Jersey post has issued a set of six stamps featiring the Ship-Building industry in Jersey: Date/Year of stamp set  issue: 15.08.2025:

The history of Ship-Building in Jersey:

Jersey has a long history of shipbuilding, particularly on its south and east coasts, with numerous yards operating from the 1800s onwards. While the island's importance in shipbuilding declined in the late 19th century due to changing economic conditions, it played a significant role in the island's prosperity for a considerable period.

Early Shipbuilding (Pre-1800s):

Jersey's location in the English Channel made it a strategic point for trade and fishing, laying the groundwork for shipbuilding.

Archaeological evidence suggests Jersey was a key location for trade as far back as Neolithic times.

By the 1500s-1600s, shipbuilding, along with agriculture, milling, fishing, and woollen goods, became a foundation of Jersey's prosperity.

19th Century Shipbuilding Boom:

The 19th century saw a significant expansion of shipbuilding in Jersey, particularly on the south coast.

George Deslandes established the first yard at First Tower in 1831.

By 1861, there were 18 yards operating on the south and east coasts, according to www.jerripedia.org.

Large-scale yards like F.C. Clarke's at West Park and Daniel Le Vesconte's at First Tower produced ships of considerable size, some reaching 900-1000 tons.

Rope-making yards and sail lofts also flourished in areas like St. Aubin and Havre des Pas, supporting the shipbuilding industry.

Decline and Modernisation:

Changes in the shipping industry, including the rise of steamships and increased competition, led to a decline in Jersey's shipbuilding.

By the end of the 19th century, the island's fleet had significantly reduced in size and tonnage.

While shipbuilding declined, Jersey's maritime history continued with fishing and private boating playing important roles.

Modernisation of the island's maritime activity is evident in the development of marinas and the use of container and roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) transport for freight.

The introduction of hydrofoils, catamarans, and wave piercers also showcases the evolution of fast passenger ships in Jersey.

During the 19th century, Jersey was a central hub for shipbuilding due to the need of vessels for global voyagers, cod fishing, wartime and local trade. Jersey’s no-taxation policy and plentiful harbours provided an excellent opportunity for the island to produce world-class, high-quality ships for a fraction of the cost from larger exporters such as Britain.

To give an overall view of the industry, Jersey Post’s Philatelic department have included insights into the islands’ shipyards, three acclaimed ships and a prominent shipyard owner whose yard built ‘The Gemini’ a world-class vessel which has made an appearance on Jersey’s 1993 pound coin.

As someone who learnt how to build boats and vessels during his early life and continues the skill as a side hobby, artist Martin Mörck was well placed to illustrate this issue. When discussing his thoughts on ships Martin often quotes his father who said: “Only two things in the world have to be created in perfect harmony, music and ships.”

Sheetlet Set:

The complete Sheet Set (SS) from 'The History of Shipbuilding in Jersey' issue. Illustrated by Martin Mörck.

The stamp sheets give the discerning collector access to all the printer’s marks and any additional information on the selvedges.

The selvedges include the traffic lights which is a term used by collectors to denote the check dots (or colour dabs) printed in the sheet margins of stamps printed by modern offset litho or photogravure methods. They assist in checking that all the colours have printed correctly.

Most of the selvedge sheets also contain a plate number; a numeral, occasionally with a letter suffix, usually inscribed on the sheet margins to denote the plate from which the stamps were printed - for example 1A.

All the mint/cto products are carefully prepared by Jersey Post's own team and supplied in glassine bags to ensure the buyer receives them in pristine condition.
