3874) King Charles III features on the Front of the G II Series of Banknotes issued by the Bank of England (BOE), United Kingdom (UK): Banknotes introduced into circulation from 04.06.2024:
The Bank of England Pound Sterling Banknotes in current circulation
consist of Series G (featuring Queen Elizabeth II) and Series GII (featuring King Chartles III), are in denominations of £5, £10, £20 and
£50.
The Front of these banknotes issued through 4 June 2024
feature the portrait of Elizabeth II originally introduced in 1990.
Starting on
5 June 2024, the Bank of England began issuing notes featuring a portrait of
Charles III, which will circulate alongside the Elizabeth II notes and
gradually replace them.
Select banks in Scotland and Northern Ireland also issue
their own banknotes at par with Bank of England issues.
Scottish and Northern
Irish notes, which are not legal tender but are promissory notes, are
occasionally rejected as payment in England by merchants unfamiliar with them,
and are likely difficult or impossible to exchange outside Britain.
Bank of England Banknotes:
Most Sterling Banknotes are issued by the Bank of England (BOE).
These are legal tender in England and Wales.
Bank of England notes are
generally accepted in the Overseas Territories which are at parity with
sterling.
In Gibraltar, there are examples of pairs of automatic cash
dispensers placed together, one stocked with Bank of England notes, and the
other with local ones.
British Overseas Territories (BOTs):
There are fourteen British Overseas Territories (BOTs), many of
which issue their own currencies Gibraltar,
the Falkland Islands, and St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha have
their own pounds which are at par with sterling.
These notes cannot be used in
the UK or outside the territories of origin.
Falkland Island pounds are also
valid in South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands and the British Antarctic
Territory. Saint Helena pounds, however, cannot be used in the constituent
territory of Tristan da Cunha, where sterling is the only official currency.
The remaining British Overseas Territories use the
Bermudian dollar, the Cayman Islands dollar, the Eastern Caribbean dollar, the
Euro, the New Zealand dollar, or the United States dollar.
Presently circulating Bank of England Banknotes of the Series G II featuring King Charles II on the Front first issued on 05.06.2024:
Like all polymer Banknotes issued by the Bank of England, these Banknotes feature a transparent window to counteract forgery, and raised dots resembling Braille to assist identification by the visually-impaired.
The Front of the Five Pounds Banknote features an effigy of King Charles III.The Back of the 5 Pounds Banknote features a postrait of Winston Churchill.

The Front of the Ten Pounds Banknote features an effigy of King Charles III.
The Back of the Ten Pounds Banknote features an image of the writer Jane Austen.
About Jane Austen (1775-1817):
She was born in 1775 as the 7th child and second daughter
of Cassandra and George Austen, who was an Oxford-educated rector for a nearby
Anglican parish. As a result of George's background, his children grew up in an
environment that stressed upon learning and creative thinking.
While Jane received some accolades for her works while
she was still alive, with her first three novels garnering critical attention
and increasing financial reward, it was not until after her death that her
brother Henry revealed to the public that she was an author. She is considered
to be one of the greatest writers in English history, in novels including
"Sense and Sensibility", Pride and Prejudice" and
"Emma". While she was not widely known in her lifetime, her
reputation increased rapidly during the early part of the 20th Century.
The Front of the Twenty Pounds Banknote features an effigy of King Charles III.
The Bank of England £20 note is a sterling banknote. It
is the second-highest denomination of banknote currently issued by the Bank of
England.
The current polymer notes, first issued on 5 June 2024, bears the
image of King Charles III on the obverse.
The other note first issued on 20
February 2020, bears the image of the late Queen Elizabeth II on the Front and the image of painter J. M. W. Turner on the Back. It replaced the cotton
paper note featuring a portrait of economist Adam Smith, first issued in 2007.
In September 2015 the Bank of England announced that the
next £20 note would be printed on polymer, rather than cotton paper.
Images on the
Back of the 20 Pounds Turner Banknote include a c.1799 self-portrait of Turner, a version
of Turner's The Fighting Temeraire, the quote "Light is therefore
colour" from an 1818 lecture by Turner, and a copy of Turner's signature
as made on his will.
Turner's self-portrait (made in 1799 AD) and currently on display in Tate Museum, Britain, would predominantly feature on the Back of the Banknote..
More about JMW Turner:
He was born in 1775 AD in London, the son of a barber,
and he entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 14.
It was in 1786 AD, when he was sent to Margate, that his
interest in painting and drawing the North-east Kent coast began. He would
return to that coast throughout his life, describing it as - "the
loveliest in all Europe".
Turner was a particularly prolific artist, producing more
than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours and 30,000 paper works over his
lifetime.
Curiously, JMW Turner was known for never having actually
signing any of his works, as such, his signature was copied from his last will
and testament, which was a document bequeathing much of his works to the nation
and is placed below his self-portrait.
Turner's contribution to art stretched well beyond his
favourite stretch of shoreline. His paintings were transformative, his
influence spanned lifetimes and his legacy endures today.
The new Banknote was made
at the Turner Contemporary Gallery in Margate, which stands at the former site
of Mrs. Booth's lodging house, where Turner would always stay when he visited.
The Gallery is a permanent display venue in the picturesque seaside town of
Margate on England's South-east coast.
The Front of the Fifty Pounds Banknote features an effigy of King Charles III.
The Back of the Fifty Pounds Banknote features an image of Alan Turing the computer scientist and World War II codebreaker Alan Turing with his birth date reflecting the release date.
The current note, the second of this denomination to be printed in polymer, entered circulation on 5 June 2024.
More about Alan Turing:
Still celebrated for his intellectual genius and
unbridled logic more than 60 years after his passing, this is the first time
Alan Turing has featured on a UK coin.
His achievements range from formulating groundbreaking
theories in the fields of computing, mathematics and biology to ingenious
code-breaking during the Second World War.
Born on 23.06.1912 in Maida Vale, London, Alan Turing
spent most of his childhood separated from his parents. His father worked in
the Indian Civil Service and his mother, whom he remained close with through
regular correspondence, insisted that her son was brought up in Britain.
At the age of 13, Turing began his secondary education at
Sherborne School in Dorset, where he showed an exceptional aptitude for science
and mathematics, frustrating those teachers who expected pupils to focus on
classics and scripture.
This didn’t stop him from taking it upon himself to study
complex scientific theories, such as relativity, and cultivating a remarkable
mind that would later carve an indelible mark in the fields of computing,
mathematics and science.
Following the death of his close friend Christopher
Morcom at Sherborne School, Turing eschewed collaboration and took a more
single-minded approach to his intellectual endeavours.
Enigma – Breaking the Code:
During the Second World War, Turing served as a
codebreaker at Bletchley Park. Ironically, he had joined the "Anti-War
Council" a few years before when he was at King’s College.
The fight Turing partook in would become one of logic and
intellect, as along with other mathematicians he faced the challenge of
cracking the code sent by the Enigma machine used by the Nazis to send cyphered
commands to their forces.
Known as a "bomba", the Polish had conceived
the idea of a codebreaking machine before the outbreak of the war.
Inspired by the design and machination, Turing and Gordon
Welchman created the "Bombe machine", named in tribute to the Poles’
work, which was able to crack Enigma and help sway the war in favour of the
Allies.
In 1946, Turing’s contribution to the war effort was
officially recognised with an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire).
The Imitation Game:
Four years after receiving his OBE, Alan Turing became a
Reader at the Computing Laboratory at the University of Manchester.
Following on from where he left off before the Second
World War, he turned his focus to an idea that explored the possibility of a
computer that could think like a human.
In 1950, he published another famous paper called
"Computing Machinery and Intelligence", which put forward a method
called the "Imitation Game" – (now known as the "Turing
Test").
The method determined a machine’s ability to exhibit
intelligence and has had an enduring influence on the field of Artificial
Intelligence (AI).
