3887) Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, A Special Territory of Chile (STOC), Samoa Island: This $25 (Twenty Five Dollars), One Kilo Silver Coin Captures The Unique Giant Statues Of Easter Island In Stunning High Relief: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2022:

Easter Island, also known as Rapa Nui, is a small, isolated island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean

It is a special territory of Chile, situated about 2,200 miles west of Chile and 1,200 miles east of Pitcairn Island. The island is famous for its giant stone statues, or moai.

The mysteries of Easter Island have intrigued many people over the years, and there aren’t a lot of solid answers to the questions - starting with the date a small group of Polynesians discovered the island, making it their home and naming it Rapa Nui

The Theories/Conjecture:

Some experts say it was around the year 800, others say it was closer to 1200. Why their civilisation collapsed is also much debated.

Some others believe it was due to dwindling resources caused by deforestation and starvation brought on by human consumption of the island’s resources.

Still some experts believe it was due to rats that had hitched a ride with the Polynesians and then consumed the lush palm trees by eating the seeds, preventing new vegetation from growing.

The Gigantic Statues:

Regardless of why the civilisation collapsed, the inhabitants left behind close to 900 statues created to honour their ancestors.

The statues - known as the Moai - were carved out of giant blocks of stone each averaging 13 feet tall and weighing 14 tons approx.

The iconic "Easter Island heads," known as Moai by the Rapa Nui people, are actually full-length statues with torsos, and while some are partially buried, archaeologists have uncovered the bodies associated with the heads, revealing the full-length statues.

A more detailed look:

What are Moai?

The Moai are monolithic statues carved from volcanic rock by the Rapa Nui people, who lived on Easter Island (also known as Rapa Nui) in the tropical South Pacific. The moai were found in a dried-out lake bed near the Rano Raraku volcano, an area that was previously inaccessible due to the lake's water level.

The discovery is significant because the lake bed had been drying up for several years, making the area accessible for the first time in a long time.

Full-Length Statues:

While often referred to as "Easter Island heads," these statues are actually full-length, with bodies hidden beneath the ground.

Archaeological Discoveries:

Archaeologists have documented and studied almost 1,000 of these statues on the island, and some have been excavated to reveal the underlying torsos and bodies.

Construction and Materials:

The Moai were carved from volcanic rock, primarily from the Rano Raraku quarry, which is rich in tuff, a compressed volcanic ash.

Purpose and Meaning:

The Rapa Nui people believed that the Moai represented their deified ancestors, and they were perhaps created to honour important tribal figures.

Size and Weight:

Moai statues can be quite large, reaching up to 10 meters (33 feet) in height and weighing up to 80 tons.

Time Period:

The Moai were carved between approximately 1100 and 1680 CE.

Cultural Significance:

The Moai are a significant symbol of Easter Island and the Rapa Nui culture, and they continue to fascinate and inspire people around the world.

In a recent discovery on Easter Island (Rapa Nui), archaeologists unearthed a previously unknown moai statue buried in a dried-out lake bed, sparking excitement about the possibility of more undiscovered statues.

Easter Island heads and their excavated bodies:

Practically everyone has seen the iconic images of the Easter Island heads. What you may not have known is that those Easter Island heads actually have hidden buried bodies.

Archaeologists have uncovered the bodies associated with the heads and found interesting discoveries that further our knowledge of the Easter Island civilisation and how they created the monoliths.

As with many things on Earth, time took its toll on the statues and buried them in sediment and rocks, hiding and preserving the torsos of the Easter Island heads. However, a team of archaeologists at UCLA developed the Easter Island Statue Project to better study and preserve the artifacts. Through this work, the team excavated several of the heads to reveal the underlying torso and body.

In total, the team documented and studied almost 1,000 statues on the small Pacific Island. The project spanned 9 years whereby the team determined to the best of their ability the meaning, function and history of each individual statue.

After approvals, the archaeologists excavated two of the Easter Island heads to reveal their torso and truncated waist. The heads had been covered by successive mass transport deposits on the island that buried the statues lower half. These events enveloped the statues and gradually buried them to their heads as the islands naturally weathered and eroded through the centuries.

The Coin:

This gigantic coin (it measures nearly 4 inches in diameter) pays tribute to the iconic monoliths that call Easter Island Home.

It’s a sumptuous and tactile High Relief Coin struck in a full Kilo of highly pure 99.9% fine silver and it’s like no coin you’ve ever seen before.
