Born as Jorge Mario Bergoglio he was elected the 266th pope in 2013 at the age of 76. He was the first pope from outside Europe in 1200 years and had chosen his papal title in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi of Italy. He was the spiritual leader to more than one-sixth of the world’s population, 1.3 billion people. Pope Francis’ role can be characterised by humility and outspoken support of the world’s poor and marginalised people.

He was actively involved in areas of political diplomacy and environmental advocacy. He pushed for climate change reform, better treatment of refugees and greater attention to persecution of religious minorities. With happiness, simplicity and selflessness he has made it his personal mission to transform the longstanding conservative image of the Catholic Church and become a “friend of the poor”.
