3847) European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known as “CERN” (French “Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire”), Switzerland: The Federalmint Swissmint has issued a CHF 20 (Swiss Franc Silver Coin highlighting the Research Centre: Date/Year of Coin issue: 13.03.2025:
On 13.03.2025, the Federal Mint Swissmint will launch the new special coin "CERN", symbolising Swiss and global innovation.
About CERN:
The European Organisation for Nuclear Research, known as “CERN” (French pronunciation: “Organisation européenne pour la recherche nucléaire”), is an intergovernmental organisation that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world.
Established in 1954, it is based in Meyrin, Western suburb of Geneva, on the France–Switzerland border. It comprises 24 member states.
Israel, admitted in 2013, is the only full member geographically out of
Europe. CERN is an official United Nations General Assembly observer.
The acronym CERN is also used to refer to the laboratory; in 2019, it had 2,660 scientific, technical, and administrative staff members, and hosted about 12,400 users from institutions in more than 70 countries.
In 2016, CERN generated 49 petabytes of data.
CERN's main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research – consequently, numerous experiments have been constructed at CERN through international collaborations. CERN is the site of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the world's largest and highest-energy particle collider.
The main site at Meyrin hosts a large computing facility, which is primarily used to store and analyse data from experiments, as well as simulate events.
As researchers require remote access to these facilities, the lab has historically been a major wide area network hub. CERN is also the birthplace of the World Wide Web.
The 12 founding member states of CERN in 1954:
The convention establishing “CERN” was ratified on 29.09.1954 by 12 countries in Western Europe.
The acronym CERN originally represented the French words for “Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire” ('European Council for Nuclear Research'), which was a provisional council for building the laboratory, established by 12 European governments in 1952.
During these early years, the council worked at the University of Copenhagen under the direction of Niels Bohr before moving to its present site near Geneva.
CERN (European Laboratory for Particle Physics) is the world's largest particle physics laboratory.
Founded in 1954 and based in Geneva, on the French-Swiss border, CERN is an international organisation with 24 member states.
Its mission is to explore the fundamental laws of the universe by studying the smallest constituents of matter, particles.
The Silver Coin:
The special silver coin highlights a flagship machine of CERN, a cutting-edge tool for research and innovation in Switzerland.
The Reverse and Obverse of the 20 Francs Silver Coin placed together
The CERN's LHC (Large Hadron Collider) is the world's largest particle accelerator.
This ring, with a circumference of 27 km, accelerates protons to a speed close to that of light before causing them to collide.
The analysis of these collisions provides a deeper understanding of the fundamental structure of matter and how the Universe works.
The Obverse of the 20 France Silver Coin depicts a magnet from the Large Hadron Collider.
These superconducting magnets are technological marvels. They generate very powerful magnetic fields to guide and concentrate the particle beams in the ring.
The peripheral inscriptions are: "CONFEDERATION HELVETICA. 2025. 20 FR."
The Reverse of the 20 Franc Silver Coin depicts one of these collisions, which generate a multitude of particles, some of which were present at the very beginning of the Universe, just after the Big Bang. The inscriptions are - "UNIVERSE OF DARKNESS: and "CERN".
The specifications of the Coin are:
