In 2019, bushfires raged across Australia, with particularly intense, dangerous fires in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. 

The scale and intensity of the bushfires was unprecedented. Nearly 17 million acres of land was burnt and about 2,000 homes were destroyed and about 30 persons losing their lives.

Access to the most affected communities remained extremely limited, with roads and airport closures, preventing immediate access. Food, water and fuel shortages compounded the dire situation for those in need of help.

Firefighters battled these wildfires for months, with whatever means they had at their disposal, in several instances risking their lives, and rescued many humans and animals, who after their injuries healed, were returned to their habitats, even today.

The Commemorative Coin:

Twelve months after the devastating bushfires that swept Australia, the Royal Australian Mint has issued a $2 Coloured Circulated Coin-in-Card, as a poignant reminder of the brave sacrifices of Australian firefighters.

The Obverse and Reverse of the $2 Coin-in-Card seen together.

The Coin commemorates and honours Australia's "fireys" and their dedicated commitment to their work.

On the Reverse of the $2 (Two Dollars) Commemorative Coin is seen a stylised representation of two fire-fighters standing back to back, with a coloured ball in the centre. The identity of the two firefighters is hidden but the figure on the left is seen as masculine and the figure on the right as feminine, as a symbol of the diversity within Australia's firefighting ranks.

The inscription on the lower periphery reads - FIREFIGHTERS".

On the Obverse of the $2 (Two Dollars) Commemorative Coin is depicted an image of Queen Elizabeth II facing right designed by Jody Clark, whose initials "JC" appear on the Queen's shoulder.

The peripheral inscriptions are - "ELIZABETH II. AUSTRALIA. 2020. 2 DOLLARS".
