3500) "Mermaid" Niue Island: "Mythological characters Coin Series": The Fourth (4th) Silver Coin in the Series: A $2 (Two Dollars - NZD) Coin minted by the Czech Mint depicting a Mermaid: Year of Coin issue: 10/2024:
The Mythology:
When our ancient ancestors passed on incredible stories full of supernatural creatures, they tried to cope with things they did not understand.
They imagined mischievous sprites who hide things, as well as massive giants whose feet shake the earth. In times of need, they begged for help from kind angels, and at night they trembled before bloodthirsty vampires. Although hundreds and thousands of years have passed, ancient legends continue to fascinate us.
The twelve-piece series of silver coins embellished with patina is dedicated to the most interesting mythical creatures.
Mythological figures - Mermaids: 4th Coin in the Series:
The fourth emission is on mermaids - seductive women whose bodies at the waist turn into a scaly fish tail.
Many a sailor has been attracted by their irresistible song, but no man can be sure what they have in store for him. One awaits a loving embrace, another is caught up in a merciless storm that seals his fate...
This silver coin of the Czech Mint's Mythological figures series features a charming Mermaid.
The home of the mermaids - seductive women whose waisted body becomes a scaly fish tail - is the endless watery depths.
Many sailors have been attracted by their irresistible song, but no man can be sure what they prepared for him. One man is waiting for a loving embrace, while another is caught in a merciless storm that seals his fate...
The mermaids are the subject of ancient Greek myths - for example, that of Odysseus, who encountered the Sirens - but they can also be found in Irish folklore and Japanese mythology.
Furthermore, the idea of their form and nature was shaped by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "The Little Mermaid". In addition to fictional stories, however, there are also actual reports of sightings of these creatures.
For example, Christopher Columbus saw a trio of mermaids off the coast of what is now the Dominican Republic, noting that they were "not half as beautiful as they are painted". It is likely that they were in fact manatees. These marine mammals may not resemble graceful mermaids, but at a distance of hundreds of metres, human eyes are not reliable. Especially when they are the eyes of a sailor who hasn't seen a woman for months...
The Reverse of the $2 (Two Dollars) Silver Coin, which is the work of medal maker Roman Å amiljan, presents the Mermaid with seductive lips, scaly skin and long hair that flows into the waves of the sea.
As the licence to issue the Czech Mint's commemorative coins is granted by the Pacific island of Niue, this face bears its national emblem, the nominal value of "2 DOLLARS (NZD)" and the year of issue "2024".
These necessary attributes are surrounded by elemental nature - rocks, clouds, trees and waves. The details of the relief are emphasized by the patina.
One can save the complete twelve-piece collection of coins with characters from the realms of myth, legend and fantasy in a collector's album which you can also find in our offer.
