3496) The Great Wall of China, Cook Islands: 20 Dollars Silver coins been minted by B.H. Mayer's Kunstprägeanstalt, at its facilities in Munich by commission of Coin Invest Trust - CIT, on behalf of the Treasury of the Cook Islands: Year of Coin issue: 2024:
The Great Wall of China (traditional Chinese: 萬里長城; simplified Chinese: 万里长城;
pinyin: Wànlǐ Chángchéng,
literally "ten thousand li long wall") is a series of fortifications
that were built across the historical northern borders of ancient Chinese
states and Imperial China as protection against various nomadic groups from the
Eurasian Steppe.
Several walls were built from as early as the 7th century BC,
with selective stretches later joined by Qin Shi Huang (220–206 BC), the first emperor of China.
Little of the Qin wall remains.
Later on, many successive dynasties built and maintained
multiple stretches of border walls. The best-known sections of the wall were
built by the Ming dynasty (1368–1644).
Apart from defense, other purposes of the Great Wall have
included border controls, allowing the imposition of duties on goods
transported along the Silk Road, regulation or encouragement of trade and the
control of immigration and emigration.
Furthermore, the defensive characteristics of the Great
Wall were enhanced by the construction of watchtowers, troop barracks, garrison
stations, signaling capabilities through the means of smoke or fire, and the
fact that the path of the Great Wall also served as a transportation corridor.
The frontier walls built by different dynasties have
multiple courses. Collectively, they stretch from Liaodong in the east to Lop
Lake in the west, from the present-day Sino–Russian border in the north to Tao
River (Taohe) in the south; along an arc that roughly delineates the edge of
the Mongolian steppe; spanning 21,196.18 km (13,170.70 mi) in total.
Presently, the
defensive system of the Great Wall is generally recognised as one of the most
impressive architectural feats in history.
Long ago, when the Great Wall protected China from the
fierce winds and its northern invaders, brave traders walked along these
ancient paths in search of new adventures and trading opportunities.
This
stunning 3 ounces silver coin masterfully captures its fabled heritage. On one
side, the wall rises in an impressive 8 mm high relief thanks to Coin Invest
Trust’s (CIT) smartmiting® technology.
The Wall is
a symbol of the boundless strength and durability of this ancient defense
system.
In addition to the relief, the design itself also
impresses with its colour applications and the fact that the wall is depicted
with partial gilding.
This gives it a fascinating lustre and makes it a real
eye-catcher.
But that’s not all!
The Coin:
The Reverse of the $20 (Twenty Dollars) Coin presents the Great Wall of China. Towards the top right is the inscription - "万里长城; THE GREAT WALL OF CHINA" (in Chinese and English).
The Obverse of this $20 (Twenty Dollars) extraordinary coin conceals a real treasure from times gone by: the old Cash coin, once a symbol of prosperity, luck and wisdom.
This antique coin representation is carved with the traditional «Lù» symbol, which stands for wealth and good fortune.
It is framed by a majestic feng shui dragon, which watches over harmony and wisdom in skillful relief.
In Chinese culture, the dragon symbolises pure power, comprehensive protection and immeasurable prosperity.
The filigree Cash coin is gold-plated, which further emphasises the timeless significance of the symbols depicted.
This coin tells a story that combines China’s rich
culture and ancient heritage with the highest craftsmanship of modern minting –
a true masterpiece!
