4023) Medieval King Saint Ladislas, Hungary: "Nation-building Sovereigns of the Arpad Dynasty": One-Ounce Gold, Silver and Bronze Proof Coins issued by the Hungarian National Bank (HNB): Date/Year of Coins issue: 2025:
The Hungarian National Bank release the third coin in their Nation Building Sovereigns series.
A familiar bust of King Ladislas is replicated on the Reverse of all coins in the set.
The imaginative series tells the stories of Hungary’s early monarchs who shaped the country in its formative years.
This series concentrates on the noteworthy Arpad dynasty with coins honouring King Saint Stephen issued in 2021 and Andras I in 2023.
For 2025, the focus is on Ladislas, King – later Saint of Hungary from 1077 until his death in 1095:
Remembered as a just ruler, he strengthened the Christian state and passed important laws to protect private property and the church.
During his reign, he successfully defended the country from external attacks by the Pechenegs and Cumans, thus strengthening the country's eastern borders for a century and a half. He was canonised in 1192 by Pope Celestine III and whose legend continues to depict him as a pious knight-king and the incarnation of the late-medieval Hungarian ideal of chivalry.
He remains a popular saint in Hungary and neighbouring nations, where many churches are dedicated to him.
His legacy is one of the pillars of medieval Hungarian statehood, and which survives to this day. Upon his death in 1095, Ladislas was succeeded by his nephew Coloman, as King of Hungary who was too young to ascend the throne when his father King Geza died.
