This Silver Commemorative Coin highlights the Industrious Ecological Insect Partner:

The Philatelic and Numismatics Division of San Marino have released a Silver Coin with an ecological theme

Though one of Europe’s smallest countries, its honey industry is considerable.

Centred on sustainable beekeeping, production focusses on local biodiversity which results in yielding raw, single-flower and wildflower - millefiori honeys along with pollen, royal jelly and propolis.

None of this activity could be possible without a particular insect partner known as the Apis mellifera, or the humble the honey bee

As such, the bee colonies of the diverse, mountainous terrain allow various species of both wild and honey bees to forage from a wide array of flora, including the famous linden or, tilia trees that line the streets and valleys of the microstate.

The reproduction of a vast number of plants depends on the valuable work of these industrious insects, which therefore contribute to the stability of ecosystems, their continued conservation and biodiversity.

Although San Marino is not a fully-fledged EU member state, their honey industry harmonises its apiculture and bee health conditions with European Union veterinary and organic standards.

The Coin:

The silver BU quality coins have been minted by the Istituto Poligrafico Zecca della Stato – IPZS at their facilities in Rome on behalf of the Banca Centrale della Repubblica di San Marino and designed by Chiara Principe.

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Silver Coin features a stylised composition of the three towers of San Marino using honeycomb shapes as a design feature.

Also shown are three honeybees pollinating both the towers and stylised flowers.

Along the upper right periphery is the name of the issuing country - "REPUBBLICA DE SAN MARINO".

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Silver Coin depicts a composition design comprised of a stylised honeycomb and in the centre, a flower with a stationary honeybee while pollinating the flower and gathering nectar.

Below the larger bee, a smaller one is shown on a stylised flower in a honeycomb cell.

Three honeycomb cells also contain stylised flowers along with the letters "A P I" (meaning "bee").

In one honeycomb cell is the year of issue, "2026" and just under the flower’s petals is the denomination 5 EURO along with a small "R" mintmark (denoting the Mint of Rome).
