4559) "The Three Norns", Germania Mint:  A 3 x 5 Mark Silver BU Coin minted by the Germania Mint and ennobled with Gold and Ruthenium: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2026:

The Norns are powerful female figures in Norse mythology who weave and control the fate of gods and humans, often compared to the Greek Fates (Moirai).

The Norns are often represented as three goddesses or sisters known as, —Urðr (Past), Verðandi (Present), and Skuld (Future)—living at the roots of Yggdrasil, the world tree, near Urðarbrunnr (Well of Fate).

They weave the threads of fate and tend to the world tree, Yggdrasil, ensuring it stays alive at the center of the cosmos.

The Norns are responsible for shaping the course of human destinies.

The origin of the name "Norn" is uncertain; and may have derived from a word meaning 'to twine', which would refer to their twining the thread of fate.

One school of thought suggests that the word norn has relation to the Swedish dialect word Norna (nyrna), a verb that means 'communicate secretly'.

This interpretation relates to the perception of Norns as shadowy, background figures who only really ever reveal their fateful secrets to people as their fates come to pass.

The name Urðr (Old English: Wyrd, 'weird') means 'fate'. Wyrd and urðr are etymological cognates, a situation that does not mean necessarily that wyrd and urðr share the same semantic quality of "fate" over time.

Both Urðr and Verðandi are derived from the Old Norse verb verða, 'to become', which itself derives from Proto-Germanic *wurdiz, from Proto-Indo-European *wrti-, which is a verbal abstract from the root *wert- ("to turn").

Often, it is asserted that while Urðr derives from the past tense ('that which became or happened'), Verðandi derives from the present tense of verða ('that which is happening'). Skuld is derived from the Old Norse verb skulu, "need/ought to be/shall be"; its meaning is "that which should become, or that needs to occur".

Due to this, it has often been inferred that the three norns are in some way connected with the past, present and future respectively, but it has been disputed that their names really imply a temporal distinction.

It has been emphasised that the words do not in their own right denote chronological periods in Old Norse but rather the idea of past, present, and future in terms of fate itself.

Relation to other Germanic female deities:

There is no clear distinction between norns, fylgjas, hamingjas, and valkyries, nor with the generic term dísir.

Moreover, artistic license permitted such terms to be used for mortal women in Old Norse poetry.

Attestations:

There are a number of surviving Old Norse sources that relate to the Norns.

The most important sources are the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda. The latter contains pagan poetry where the Norns are frequently referred to, while the former contains pagan poetry as well as retellings, descriptions and commentaries by the 12th and 13th century Icelandic chieftain and scholar Snorri Sturluson.

Names & Meanings:

Urðr (Past): Derived from Old Norse verða (“to become”), linked to what has already happened.

Verðandi (Present): Represents what is currently unfolding.

Skuld (Future): From skulu (“shall/ought to be”), symbolising what must or will happen.

Symbolism & Functions

Threads of Fate: Each life is imagined as a thread; the Norns spin, measure, and cut it.

Cosmic Balance: They water Yggdrasil with sacred waters to keep the tree alive, sustaining the cosmos.

Birth & Destiny: Often present at births, assigning fate to newborns. This connects them with midwifery traditions.

More about the Norns:

In the shadow of Yggdrasil’s sprawling roots, the World Tree, whispers can be heard on the Norns -

they are three ancient seeresses of the race of giants - wove and guarded the fate of all existence.

Urd, Verdandi, and Skuld - the Past, the Present, and What Is Yet to Come. Three sisters whose names are the very rhythm of time.

Their home was the well of Urd, a sacred source of wisdom and destiny. There, in the half-light of the tangled roots, the Whispering Ones watered the tree with water and white clay from the well, healing its wounds and maintaining the balance of the world.

For if it were to wither, the fate of gods and men alike would come to an end.

Every day they spun the golden threads of life. From their weaving, human destinies were born – delicate, sometimes tangled, and occasionally abruptly cut by the edge of their shears. The Norns appeared at births to grant a name and a fate to each new life.

And when the time of death came, one of them would sever the thread of life, ending the soul’s journey through the earthly world.

The Coin:

On the Reverse of the 3 x 5 Mark Silver BU Coin, each Norn is depicted at the foot of Yggdrasil in a characteristic scene reflecting her role in the fate of the world:

Urd weaves the golden thread of the past, gathering memories and experiences that shape the present;

Werdanda sits immersed in the present moment, reminding us of the importance of every decision and action “here and now”;

Skuld, in a mysterious cloak and hood, gazes into the future, determining the destinies yet to come. The finely crafted details of their garments, braids, and jewelry highlight the unique character of each Norn, while the additional gold and ruthenium enhancement gives the coins exceptional brilliance and depth.

The Obverse of the 3 x 5 Mark Silver BU Coin features the Germania Mint double-headed eagle, surrounded by the roots of Yggdrasil and golden threads of fate, broken in places to symbolise both the influence of the past and the potential to shape the future.

Struck by Germania Mint and ennobled with gold and ruthenium, the coins combine mythological symbolism, artistic precision, and luxurious finishing, with details that convey the majesty and mystery of the goddesses of fate.
