The German Federal Republic’s Ministry of Finance and the Deutschland (German Mint) has brought out the fourth coin titled "Police (Polizei)" in this Coin Series which began in 2022 with the theme “In the Service of Society.”

This Coin Series will highlight particular groups of people who are indispensable for those affected by emergencies regarding safety and health and also for the functioning in human society as a whole from disasters both natural and man-made.

The Series highlights the special importance of groups of people who are indispensable for the functioning of our society and the lives of each individual.

After the 2022-dated coin highlighting "Health Care" (in the field of medicine), the 2023 Coin focussed on the "Fire Brigade", whose responsibility is far-reaching and includes much more than fighting fires, the 3rd coin in Germany’s “In the Service of Society” Series was dedicated to the "Police" (issued in 2024), and the 4th coin highlighted the "Federal Agency for Technical Relief" (Technisches Hilfswerk, THW), released on 24 April 2025. "Rescue Services" was the fifth issue in the "In the Service of Society" Series (issued in April 2026).

The Series focusses on the people who are frontline responders and indispensable for the functioning of society as a whole.

Every coin design in the series and its specific focus will be represented by a particular colour for an occupational group:

Coin Colour Details:

This colour was chosen to symbolise emergency medical services and life-saving rescue operations.

2022 – Care (Pflege): Mint-turquoise polymer ring

2023 – Fire Brigade (Rescue Services): Fire-engine-red polymer ring

2024 – Police: Cobalt-blue polymer ring

2025 – Technical Relief (THW): Blue polymer ring

2026 - Rescue services: Polymer Ring Color: Orange

This coin is the third issue in the "In the Service of Society" Series.

"Police (Polizei)":

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as "the" police: In Germany, this includes 16 state police forces and three police forces at the federal level: the Federal Police, the Federal Criminal Police Office and the Police of the German Bundestag.

The main focus of its activities is on the forward-looking prevention of dangers (preventive action) and the prosecution of criminal offences (repressive action).

When people talk about the police, they usually think of the uniformed police officers, who are often the first point of contact in emergencies and are also the first to rush to the scene of accidents or crimes.

Their tasks go far beyond filing criminal charges or protecting events.

For example, they monitor public traffic areas and regularly organise prevention events to prevent accidents or crimes – from cycling training at primary school to efficient protection against burglars and needs-based prevention measures for senior citizens, for example against fraud attempts on the Internet or by "shock call".

The police officers are also on duty in cases of domestic violence and are often exposed to attacks against their own person.

In addition to the police, there are special units for different purposes at the federal state level.

For example, the riot police support their colleagues on site at special major events such as football matches and demonstrations or in the removal of storm damage.

The water police ensure safety on seas and waters, while the criminal investigation department primarily prosecutes crimes and is the investigating authority of the public prosecutor's office.

At the federal level, the Federal Criminal Police Office is the central office for information collection and maintains contact with international police authorities such as Europol, for example when it comes to combating international drug and human trafficking or terrorism.

The Federal Police protects the borders of the Federal Republic of Germany and ensures security at airports and train stations.

This overview alone, which is by no means complete, makes it clear that the work of the police is extremely multifaceted. All those who serve there are aware that their own physical integrity can be damaged. This risk is accepted in order to maintain order in the Federal Republic of Germany and to enable all citizens to live a carefree life.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the 10 Euro Tri-material Polymer Ring Coin.

The unconditional deployment and responsiveness of the police is also taken up by the motif of the 10-euro polymer ring coin, designed by the artist Lorenz Crössmann from Berlin.

In the centre of the coin, framed by the polymer ring, it shows two police officers in uniform, who confidently and openly turn to the viewer, thus signalling a willingness to communicate.

The composition is complemented by various task forces, which exemplify the diversity of police activities, as well as the stylized representation of rural and urban areas.

The police star at the top of the coin – with a neutral coat of arms representing all police forces of the states and the federal government – and the sans serif lettering "POLIZEI", which is reminiscent of the official lettering on official vehicles, form the fixed points of a successful depiction, whose "outstanding craftsmanship and compositional quality" is praised by the jury of the coin competition.

The Obverse of the 10 Euro Tri-material Polymer Ring Coin depicts a stylised eagle centred with the year of issue "2024" placed just under and the denomination of "10 EURO" shown below the eagle on the outer ring.

The issuer "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" is placed along the top edge.

On the outside of the polymer ring are 12 stars representing the European Union arranged as six stars on each side in a semi-circle.

The incused edge lettering reads: "IM DIENST DER GESELLSCHAFT" (“IN THE SERVICE OF SOCIETY”).

A mintmark is shown just above the eagle with all five national mints represented with: Berlin (A), Munich (D), Stuttgart (F), Karlsruhe (G), and Hamburg (J).
