The India Security Press (ISP), established in 1925 in Nashik, Maharashtra, is one of Asia’s oldest and most prestigious security printing institutions.
Its foundation was laid on September 25, 1924, based on the 1924 report by Lt. Col. G. W. Willis and F. D. Ascoli, who recommended domestic production of currency and security documents.
Its Operations began in December 1925, marking a significant milestone in India’s journey toward self-reliance in security printing.
In 1928, the Currency Note Press (CNP) was established on the same premises to print currency notes for the nation.
From its early years, ISP played a pivotal role in producing high-security materials such as currency notes, postage stamps, postal stationery, judicial and non-judicial stamps, fiscal stamps, election stationery, MICR cheques, academic certificates, and excise labels.
Until 1962, ISP printed secure currency notes for the Reserve Bank of India, using advanced printing technologies to produce counterfeit resistant currency and strengthen India’s financial system.
In 2006, the Press became part of the "Security Printing & Minting Corporation of India Limited" (SPMCIL), a wholly owned Government of India company under the Ministry of Finance. ISP in India responsible for printing Passports and other travel documents, including PIO cards, OCI cards, and various Visa and Apostille stickers.
It now operates a state-of-the-art e-Passport manufacturing facility, reinforcing India’s commitment to secure, technology-driven documentation.

A dedicated Design Studio develops new printing technologies to stay ahead of counterfeiters, while ISP’s production of all Definitive, Service, and most Commemorative Postage Stamps showcases India’s cultural heritage and postal legacy.
