3197) "Kurumba Paintings", Chennai: Tamil Nadu Postal Circle of India Post has issued a Special Cover (SC) from its Chennai Post Office: Date of Special Cover issue: 01.09.2023:

About the Kurumba Tribe:

Kurumbas (or) Kurumbar (Tamil: "Kurumban", "Kurumbar") (Malayalam: "Kuruman") (Kannada: "Kuruba, Kurubaru") are a designated Scheduled Tribe or an indigenous community in the Indian states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.

The Kurumbar are one of the earliest known inhabitants of the Western Ghats, who are engaged in the collection and gathering of forest produce, mainly wild honey and wax. However, the restrictions to protect native forest and wildlife have forced them to find work outside the forests. The members of this community are short, have dark skin, and have protruding foreheads.

Kurumbar are partially Sanskritised to believing in Hinduism. The main deity of the tribe is Lord Shiva under the name of Bhairava. They also worship animals, birds, trees, rock hillocks, and snakes, along with the other Hindu deities.

There are several divisions of Kurumba - Jenu, Betta and Allu

Each of these divisions speaks their own Dravidian language. Jenu Kurubas are primarily found in the northern part of the Nilgiris, in the Mysuru district of Karnataka.

Kurumbar are one of the six ancient tribal groups in Tamil Nadu. Hunting and collecting forest produce are the two main means of living for the Kurumbar tribe.

Kurumba Art:

The Kurumba art is an expression of its socio-religious fabric. The art is traditionally practiced by the male members of the temple caretakers, or priest to the Kurumba village. The women of the family contribute to the decorations at home in the form of borders around the door and windows and kolams on the floor. Other Kurumbas are not allowed to practice the art.

A Special Cover (SC) issued by the Tamil Nadu Postal Crcle of India Post:
