Brief History of the Batallion:

Eighth Batallion, Brigade of the Guards was raised at Kota on 01.10.1963.

In 1971, 8 Guards participated in "THE BATTLE OF HILLI"and captured the dominating enemy bastion of "HILLI".

For the attack, the Batallion was bestowed with "BATTLE HONOUR HILLI" and "THEATRE HONOUR EAST PAKISTAN, 1971".

The batallion boasts of "three Mahavir Chakras", "two Veer Chakras", "one Sena Medal" and three "Mention - in Despatches" in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

On the Republic Day Parade of 1972, the batallion was given the unique honour of marching down Rajpath in recognition of its valour in battle.

On 16 March 1973, the then President Mr. V.V. Giri presented colours to the Batallion at Kota.

Apart from outstanding operational achievements , the unit also excelled in the sports arena during the period from 1970 to 1975, with Sub Maj (Hony Capt) MA Siddiqui, VSM winning the National heavy weight Boxing Championship, and securing a Silver Medal in Asian Games in Bangkok, 1974.

Tn April 1987, the batallion moved to Leh (Ladakh) for "OP MEGHDOOT" wherein it held defences in Siachen Glacier. The batallion surmounted gruelling odds, coupled with heavy enemy fire, and yet carried out effective vigil and constructed new posts and dropping zones.

Between 1989 and 1995, the batallion shouldered onerous operational responsibilities in Jammu & Kashmir, Manipur and Nagaland and excelled in consonance with its highest traditions.

During this period, the Batallion was awarded Unit Citation by Chief of Army Staff for its exceptional success in counter insurgency operations.

For its impeccable professional reputation, the unit was yet agin tasked for counter insurgency Ops and deployed for smooth conduct of Amarnath Yatra in Jammu & Kashmir in 1996, before it moved to Hissar for conversion into the Mechanised Infantry profile.

the "Eighth" became a full-fledged Mechanised Infantry batallion in January 1998 after a gruelling test exercise in the unfirgiving Thar Desert.

In Janury 2006, the batallion contributed a "ICV" based mounted contingent for the Republic Day Parade, creating history, as it now has the unique honour of contributing both a marching and a mounted contingent for the Republic Day Parade.

As a mark of recognition of its excellence, the batallion was selected to field four mechanised company columns for peace keeping operations in war torn region of Democratic Republic of Congo from 2007 to 2009, under United Nations Mission Congo (MONUC).

The batallion has earned the following honours and awards since its inception in 1963:

MVC - 03, VC - 02, AVSM - 04, VSM - 03, SC - 01, SM - 09, M-in-D - 03.
