Nicknamed Param Vir Chakra Paltan after the PVC won by
Grenadier Yogendra Singh Yadav.
The concept of 'Grenadiers' evolved from the practice of selecting the bravest and most influential men for the most dangerous tasks in combat.
The Special Cover (SC) is titled "18 Grenadiers" and presents the Regimental emblem/insignia of the Regiment at left. There is a picture of the soldiers of the Battalion after they had captured Tiger Hill and routed the Pakistani infantry.
Below the picture is mentioned Silver Jubilee (1993-2024). Battle Honour Tiger Hill.
At top right is affixed a 500 Paise (Rs.5/-) postage stamp cancelled with a special cancellation stamp featuring the image of the capture of Tiger Hill.
The postal address is of 56 APO and the date of Cancellation is - 04.07.2024.
The Back of the Special Cover (SC) gives the serial no. of the Cover as APS/38/2024 on top. At the bottom is the issuing authority - Addl. Dte Gen APS C/0 56 APO
The Information Brochure gives the following description:
"TIGER HILL - PVC PALTAN: BATTLE HONOUR TIGER HILL:
1. Although 18 GRENADIERS has many tales of valour etched into its history, the landmark moment came during the "Kargil Conflict".
During the Kargil conflict, the nation's will and military might was tested through which India not only emerged victorious but also established itself as an influential nation and a power to reckon with the the Asian Region. The victory in Kargil Conflict proved to be a power statement for modern India.
2. After the hostilities broke out, 18 GRENADIERS was soon inducted into the operational area. The first objective assigned to the unit was the daunting and formodable "Tololing top".
Many attempts had been madepreviously to recapture this top, but all did not succeed owing to a well-entrenched enemy who had accurate artillery support.
As 18 GRENADIERS launched its attack, the Second-in-Command Lt Col R. Vishwanathan, VrC (Posthumously) led from the front. The men followed and marched ahead, braving enemy fire, artillery shelling and inclement weather. Through continued efforts and indomitable will, the valiant soldiers of 18 GRENADIERS recaptured the Tololing Top.
For this extraordinary achievement the Battalion was awarded BATTLE HONOUR TOLOLING.
3. After a brief pause, following the stupendous victory at Tololing, the Commanding Officer found himself briefing the top brass regarding his plan to recapture "TIGER HILL".
Tiger Hill was an all-important feature in the Kargil Sector. Sitting atop this towering feature, the enemy brought down observed artillery fire onto the National Highway 1A, thus choking the lifeline in the Kargil Sector.
Recapture of this feature would mean decisive victory for India. Considering the rough terrain and well-positioned enemy, it was decided to attack from multiple directions. One of these was an almost unthinkable of an approach - a cliff.
But the bravehearts of 18 GRENADIERS were determined to carry out this meticulous and audacious plan.
On the night of 03/04 July 1999 the attack was launched and against all odds, a foothold was established on 04 July. But the fight was far from over. A bitter battle followed. Launching multiple assaults on the enemy, fighting till the last breath, the valiant soldiers of 18 GRENADIERS pressed in the attack. It took hundreds of heroic acts and great sacrifices to finally recapture the entire feature.
On 08 Jul with the rising sun, carrying the spirits of their martyrs, 18 GRENADIERS recaptured the TIGER HILL.
This historic victory was covered extensively by mass media. The nation was beaming with joy and pride.
4. This victory turned the tables in favour of India. By capturing this last foothold of the enemy intruders, 10 GRENADIERS ended thye war. For this excellent achievement, the Battaliomwas bestowed with BATTLE HONOUR KARGIL.
But the path to victory was paved by the supreme sacrifices of our martyrs. Their herculean efforts and supreme sacrifices would always be remembered by the entire nation.
Today, standing at this historic milestone, we remember the spirit and legacy laid down by our heroes.
