4176) Saint Wenceslas, Czech Republic: Czech Mint has minted 10,000 Koruna, One-Ounce Gold Coins which celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the beginning of the reign of King, later Saint Wenceslas: Date/Year of Coin issue: 22.-09.2025:
The Czech National Bank has issued 10,000 Koruna, One-Ounce Gold Coins which celebrate the 1100th anniversary of the beginning of the reign of King, later Saint Wenceslas:
A depiction Prince Wenceslas from a well-known fresco is
recreated on the Reverse of the 10,000 Koruna Gold Coin minted by the Czech Mint on behalf of the Czech National Bank
This year, the subject of the latest gold coin is
dedicated to the 1100th anniversary of the beginning of the reign of King,
later Saint Wenceslas.
A brave knight, a pious prince and holy martyr is how
the protector of all Czechs and the heavenly patron of the Czech land is
remembered today.
But what Wenceslas was really like can only be hypothesised
and surmised in terms of a real historical figure and that of an idealised
legend that generations of chroniclers have reshaped to their own image over
the centuries.
Unfortunately, very little is still known about the man
from the Přemyslid dynasty, who lived at a time when Christianity was just
taking root and when the long process of consolidating Czech statehood was
underway.
Even so, we know that as the son of Prince Vratislav, he was raised
by his grandmother Ludmila, a devoted Christian, which his mother Drahomíra was
often placed in a subordinate place in Wenceslas’s life.
When Wenceslas’ father Vratislav passed away, Drahomíra, who
yearned for power, sensed an opportunity to achieve this as Wenceslas was not
yet of age, so she took over the government.
She expelled Christian priests,
demolished newly built churches and finally had her mother-in-law Ludmila
murdered.
When Wenceslas finally became of age to assume power for himself and
seized the princely throne, he banished his treacherous mother for all of her
misdeeds.
It is interesting to note that Wenceslas was described as
a tall man with a narrow face and contrary to popular belief, he was likely
fair-haired.
The exact time when he assumed power is not specifically
documented in historical sources.
However, it can be proven that he ruled in
the autumn of 925, when he had the remains of his Grandmother St. Ludmila
transferred to Prague, and thus Czech history symbolically marks and
commemorates this date.
For ten years, he ruled as his grandmother had taught
him and is remembered as a kindly, just sovereign and as a God-fearing servant
of the Lord - which meant he would eventually forgive his mother Drahomíra.
The
country prospered – even after Wenceslas was militarily defeated by the German
monarch Henry I, founder of the Saxon dynasty.
Despite the loss, Wenceslas managed to preserve the
sovereignty of the Czech lands, though it was at the cost of submitting to the
German Empire.
But Wenceslas' younger brother Boleslav, who could not bear
this, conspired to betray and murder his brother and sovereign.
This
fratricidal feud, which has become an integral part of Czech national folklore,
has been passed down from generation to generation for a thousand years since
then.
Today, King Wenceslas is the only Czech Saint whose feast day is part of the
worldwide calendar of the Roman Catholic Church.
For many, his name Good King
Wenceslas is a charming and uplifting Christmas carol that tells a story of the
tenth-century king of Bohemia - modern day Czech Republic who goes on a
journey, braving harsh winter weather, to give alms to a poor peasant on the
Feast of Stephen.
