4543) 200 Years of Hindi Journalism, Bharat/India: Bhartiya Dak/India Post has issued a Postage Stamp of 500p (or Rs.5/-) commemorating the milestone: Date/Year of Stamp issue: 30.05.2026:
The first Hindi newspaper of India i.e., "Udant Martand", which was first published on 30 May 1826 from Kolkata under the editorship of Yugal Kishore Shukla, regarded as the pioneer editor of Hindi journalism.
Published with the objective of serving the interests of Hindi-speaking people, Udant Martand sought to make news and information accessible in the Hindi language at a time when newspapers were primarily available in English, Persian, and Bengali.
The title "Udant Martand", meaning “The Sun of News,” symbolised the role of journalism in spreading awareness and knowledge among the masses.
Although Udant Martand ceased publication on 4 December 1827 due to lack of official patronage, absence of postal distribution facilities, and inadequate public support, it laid the foundation of Hindi journalism in India.
Over the last two centuries, Hindi journalism has evolved tremendously in terms of readership, language, subject diversity, printing techniques, and communication technologies. It has played a significant role in creating an informed society and in shaping modern Hindi prose and literary expression.
Many eminent personalities and publications contributed immensely to this journey.
Bharatendu Harishchandra pioneered the Hindi renaissance, while Baburao Vishnu Paradkar’s enriched vocabulary.
Acharya Hindi journalistic Mahavir Prasad Dwivedi standardised Hindi prose through Saraswati, and publications such as Pratap by Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi and Karmveer by Makhanlal Chaturvedi became milestones in the history of Hindi journalism. The spiritual magazine Kalyan, edited by Bhaiji Hanuman Prasad Poddar, also occupies a distinguished
place in Hindi publishing.
