Wonderful World of Insects German Federal Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Munze Deutschland have begun a new series of coins which focusses on the "Great Biodiversity of Insects", we share the planet with.

The Header/Banner is titled "HAINSCHWEBFLIEGE" ("Grove HoverFly") at the bottom, with the Reverse and Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel coin presented against a background representation of a Grove Hoverfly.

Titled the “Wonderful World of Insects,” the Coin Series will feature the "Big Four", which encompasses beetles, dipterans (flies and mosquitoes), hymenoptera (bees, wasps, ants), and butterflies, of which 80% of all known insects belong to.

Insects have lived and evolved on Earth since the first dinosaurs around 480 million years ago.

They owe their great biodiversity to co-evolution with flowering plants, more than 75 percent of which are pollinated by insects.

Insects inhabit all terrestrial and freshwater habitats except the open oceans and perform important functions in all ecosystems.

Many insects are considered pests by humans, especially in urban habitats but, in truth, humans also owe their existence to the many species of insects, especially those whose function is to pollenate countless plants and sources of agriculture.

The native insect world is not only an indispensable part of the fauna in Germany - but this is also true for all of Europe and, of course, the rest of the world.

The Seventh coin in this fascinating Numismatic Series entitled “Wonderful World of Insects,” has been released which highlights the great biodiversity of the many insects we share our varied environments with.

The Grove Hoverfly:

The seventh coin in the 5-euro colour print series "Wonderland Insects" highlights the "Grove Hoverfly", the great biodiversity of the many insects we share our varied environments with.

The insect, placed centrally in the coin circle and depicted in an oblique view, gives the motif plasticity and depth.

In addition, the body of the fly and the flowers surrounding it are finely and very successfully modeled, and the transparency of the wings is skillfully depicted.

The inscription made of simple, clear capitals gives the airy, floating overall impression the necessary support.

The value side is identical for all coins in the series.

The design, designed by artist Andre Witting from Berlin, impresses with a dignified yet dynamic depiction of the federal eagle.

Background information - Grove Hoverfly

The grove hoverfly, approximately 7 to 12 mm in size, is one of the approximately 450 hoverfly species that are native to Austria.

What is particularly striking is its yellow-black coloring, which is reminiscent of a wasp. This is how the grove hoverfly protects itself against predators, while itself is completely harmless and has no sting.

As a fly, it is a dipteran and has two large front wings, while the second pair of wings, like all flies, is converted into swinging flasks.

This makes the grove hoverfly particularly fast and maneuverable.

Thanks to its wing movement of up to 300 beats per second, it can stay in the air like a helicopter. She is also able to fly backwards.

The grove hoverfly can be found on almost all flowers; it lays its eggs directly on colonies of aphids, on which the larvae feed.

That's why, like the seven-spot ladybird, it is used for biological pest control.

The adults are also important pollinators. Like migratory birds, many grove hoverflies, which can travel up to 25 kilometers per hour, migrate south in late summer and overwinter in southern Europe or North Africa. Accessories.

The Coin:

The Reverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) coin.

The Reverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) Coin is designed by Andre Witting from Berlin and includes the insect, placed centrally in the coin circle and depicted in an oblique view, gives the motif plasticity and depth.

In addition, the body of the fly and the flowers surrounding it are finely and very successfully modeled, and the transparency of the wings is skillfully depicted. The inscription made of simple, clear capitals gives the airy, floating overall impression the necessary support.

Below the primary design is the text "HAINSCHWEBFLIEGE" placed along the lower periphery.

Digital printing is applied to the design, which includes vivid colours to highlight the design.

The Obverse of the 5 Euro Cupro-nickel (CuNi) Coin which is common for all Coins in the Series, features a stylised Eagle in the centre with the name of the issuing country - "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" placed directly above along the edge.

The denomination "5 EURO" is just under the name of the issuing country.

Also incorporated into the design are twelve stars below the eagle, which represent the European Union, and are arranged along the lower edge.

The mintmark "J" is seen between the second and third star representing the Hamburg Mint, and the year of issue "2024" is seen between the ninth and tenth star.

The incused inscription on the edge of the coin reads "WONDERWELT INSECTEN" (“Wonderful World of Insects”).

The remaining coins will be released,in 2024, and will include nine coins in all:

The schedule is as follows:

Grove Hoverfly (2nd Quarter 2024)

Steinhummel (4th Quarter 2024)

The specifications of the Cupro-nickel Coin are:

A Coin Album:

A high-quality and elegantly designed Souvenir Coin Album is available as a separate purchase and is an ideal way to store each of the five Euro coloured coins from the “Wonderful World of Insects” Series.

It offers space for all the coins and also includes an informative reference and text narrative in which all further information and interesting facts about the insects in the series can be found with their selected motifs and profiles.

The nine encapsulated coins in the series can be easily inserted in and out of the album

The booklet in the folder reveals, among other things, why insects are so important for us humans, how we can protect them, but also interesting facts such as which of the insects migrates like migratory birds in late summer to the south and much more worth knowing.
