About the Hungarian Sheep and Hunting Dog Breed Coin Series:

The Hungarian National Bank has released the fifth coin, which is part of the popular and sought-after collector series entitled “Hungarian Herding and Hunting Breeds.”

Begun in 2019, the designs feature many canine breeds indigenous to Hungary, some of which have made their way to other parts of the world and are some of the most beloved and admired breeds.

The five coins in this series featured so far are - the "Komondor", "Vizsla", "Magyar Agar", "Mudi" and "Erdelyi Kopo", this working dog series has been popular the world over with breeders and owners.

The Banner/Header shows the Reverse and Obverse of the 3,000 Forint Proof-like Coin against a background image of The Kuvasz facing right, standing against the Hungarian Flag.

This is the sixth issue in the "Hungarian Sheep and Hunting Dog Breed" 2,000 Forint Commemorative Coin Series being issued by the Budapest Mint on 04.10.2021. This Coin features the Kuvasz.

All coins in the “Hungarian Sheep and Hunting Dog Breeds” Coin Series, thus far, have been on breeds originating in Hungary. The Coin Series objective is primarily to commemorate Hungarian Dog Breeds.

These dog breeds of Hungarian origin have found themselves transported and nurtured in many other parts of the world, particularly after the suffering endured during World War II (WWII), when some of them faced the end of the line due to dwindling populations.

Those post WWII migrations are the reason this coin series has been so widely popular world-wide. The breeds have found their way to many new regions of the world and their proponents are as loyal and loving as the dogs themselves.

Hungary's Sheep and Hunting Dogs coin usually sells out every year at the Hungarian Mint within days of release, and rank among the best-selling Hungarian coins.

The Hungarian Kuvasz:

The Kuvasz is a Hungarian breed of flock guardian dog. Mention of the breed can be found in old Hungarian texts. They have historically been royal guard dogs, or guarded livestock, but have been increasingly found in homes as pets over the last seventy years. The Kuvasz originated in the Carpathian Basin and has since become renowned among Hungarian dogs worldwide.

By the end of World War II, nearly all the Kuvasz dogs in Hungary had been killed. The dogs had such a reputation for protecting their families that they were actively sought and killed by German and Soviet soldiers, while at the same time some German officers used to take Kuvasz dogs home with them. After the Soviet invasion and the end of the war, the breed was nearly extinct in Hungary. After the war, it was revealed that fewer than thirty Kuvasz were left in Hungary, and some sources indicate the number may have been as few as twelve. Since then, due to many dedicated breeders, the Kuvasz is back.

They are sometimes known as gentle giants. Males can weigh 100 to 115 pounds and stand 28 to 30 inches tall. Females are slightly smaller, weighing 70 to 90 pounds and standing 26 to 28 inches tall.

The Coin:

The Kuvasz is portrayed on both sides of this legal tender 3,000-forint coin, with a profile view of one on the front, and a pair herding on the back.

The coin is made of a copper-nickel-zinc alloy, is 34 mm (1½ in.) in diameter and weighs 16 grams. It has a maximum mintage of 20,000 coins. It is struck in proof-like quality and is available while they last for $22.95 (5 or more for $19.95 each) when it is released by the mint in Budapest.

These base metal coins have been minted by Hungary’s National Mint at their facilities in Budapest, on behalf of the National Bank, and have been designed by András Szilos.

The inscriptions are - "MAGYARORSZAG" ("Hungary") (on the upper periphery), the denomination of the Coin "3000 FORINT" (to the right of the Dog's image), "BP" (mint mark of the Budapest Mint at centre right) and year of issue" 2023".

The specifications of this Coin are:

    1. The Hungarians are very proud of their dog breeds, Vikram. This series explores their most popular breeds. The Budaspest Mint is in no hurry to bring out coins on them. Only after meticulous research the coins are designed and minted. This coin was minted only after two years, the last one being in 2023.
