1466) Diplocaulus : Sixth Coin in the "Evolution of Life Coin Series" brought out by Coin Invest Trust on behalf of the Republic of Mongolia: Coin minted by B.H. Mayer's Kunstprageanstalt GmbH issued in 08/2020:
Coin Invest Trust (CIT) has brought out a large and diverse collection of new stunning, High Repief Coin releases spanning a wide range of topics, shapes and designs over a period of time.
About the "Evolution of Life Coin Series":
Mongolia is famous for its rich fossil record, including dramatic species like the "Velociraptor" - popularised by the Jurassic Park Movie Series.
The "Evolution of Life Coin Series" pays tribute to past eras by portraying extinct prehistoric creatures in luxurious rose-gilded Smartminting High Relief on an antique finish rock matrix background for Silver Coins and portrayed on Gold Coins.
The first issue in the "Evolution of Life" Coin Series was the "Ammonite" from the Devonian Period - 419 million to 350 million years ago (issued in 2015), the second coin featured the "Trilobite" - from the Ordovician Period - 440 million to 500 million years ago (issued in 2016), the third coin featured the "Ichthyosaur" from the Mesozoic Era - The Age of the Reptiles" - 70 million to 225 million years ago (2017), the fourth coin in the Series, featured a theme of movement from the sea to the skies with "Pterosauria", which show-cased the native "Noripterus parvus" that roamed the Mongolian skies 140 milloin years ago, which had a wing-span of over four metres, whose fossils were first described from Central Mongolia by a Canadian team in 1987 (Coin issued in 2018).
The 2019 edition of the "Evolution of Life" Coin Series showcased the "Sinraptor" (the name coming from the Latin prefix "Sino" meaning "Chinese" and "Raptor" meaning "Robber". The Sinraptor was officially discovered/recognised only about 33 years ago in China with a almost complete skeleton/fossil. As such, it can be considered a "new dinisaur".
The 2020 edition of the Coin Series features the Diplocaulus:
Diplocaulus (meaning "Double Stalk") is an extinct genus of lepospondyls amphibians which lived from the Late Carboniferous to Permian periods of North America and Africa (roughly 270 million years ago), long before the dinosaurs evolved. As such it was not a dinosaur.
Diplocaulus is by far the largest and best known of the lepospondyls characterised by a distinctive boomerang-shaped skull which was formed by two elongated bones at the back of the head.
It was a tetrapod, an amphibian, a labyrinthodont, and a nectridian and had a short, flattened tail. Its unusually-shaped head made it difficult for predators, such as the Europs to swallow it. Its head was also used as a hydro-foil, letting it swim against the current.
Its remains have been found from the Late Permian of Morocco and represent the youngest-known occurrence of a lepospondyls.
Its diet consisted of insects and fish.
It had a stocky, salamander-like body, but was relatively large, reaching up to 1.0 metre (or 3.3 feet in length).
Although a complete tail is unknown for the genus, a nearly complete articulated skeleton described in 1917 preserved a row of tail vertebrae near the head.
This was construed as circumstantial evidence for a long, thin tail capable of reaching the head, if the animal was curled up.
It is now felt after this discovery that anguiliform (eel-like) tail movement was the main force of locomotion utilised by Diplocaulus and its relatives.
Like all amphibians, it lived near the water since amphibian eggs have no shells and must be laid in the water (or in very damp areas) or they will dry out and die. Also it lost its gills as an adult.
