1596) "Valkyrie" ("Chooser of the Slain Warriors"), Niue Islands: The second coin in the "Woman Warriors Coin Series": A $5 Dollars (5 New Zealand Dollars - NZD) Silver Coin depicts a Valkyrie Warrior: Year of Coin issue: 2020:
"Valkyrie" (or "Walkyrie" or "Valkyrja" in Old Norse):
"Valkyrie" is anyone of a group of maidens who served the God Odin and were sent by him to the battle-fields to choose the slain warriors, who were worthy of a place in "Valhalla" (the abode of the Norse Gods).
These foreboders of war rode to the battle-fields on horses, wearing helmets and shields and sometimes flew through the air and sea.
Some Valkyries had the power to cause the death of the warriors they did not favour, others especially "heroine" Valkyries, guarded the lives and ships of those warriors dear to them.
Old Norse literature made several references to purely supernatural Valkyries and also to human Valkyries with certain supernatural powers.
Both kinds of beings were associated with fairness, brightness and gold, as well as, bloodshed.
The "Woman Warriors Coin Series":
After the Amazon Warriors (First Coin in the Series titled "Woman Warriors"), this is the second coin in the Coin Series and features the Valkyrie, the legendary warrior from Norse mythology.
The Reverse of the $5 (Five New Zealand Dollars - NZD) Silver Coin depicts a Valkyrie in battle, with a stunning gold plated sword and wooden shield inlay, with the letter "V" emblazoned thereon.
The peripheral inscriptions are - "WOMAN WARRIOR" (at upper left periphery) and VALKYRIE" (on the lower right periphery).
The Obverse of the $5 (Five New Zealand Dollars - NZD) Silver Coin depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, whose initials "IRB" appear below the Queen's neck.
The peripheral inscriptions are - " NIUE ISLAND - 2020" (ON the upper periphery) "ELIZABETH II" (on the inner upper periphery) and "FIVE DOLLARS" towards the inner lower periphery), together with the metal composition of the coin - "Ag .999".
The Coin design on this face features that of a round old Norse wooden shield, the kind that was used in battle by the Norse/Viking warriors.
