The Lehrmittelverlag Zürich (LMVZ) was founded 175 years ago because the teachers in the canton wanted top quality, standardised teaching materials.
The Lehrmittelverlag Zürich (LMVZ) was founded at the initiative of teachers in 1851 by Alfred Escher, then Head of the Department of Education.
The publishing house belonging to the canton of Zurich was created to ensure that public schools remained independent of private providers when it came to teaching materials, both in terms of content and financing.
School books were intended to be of high quality and affordable in order to encourage equal opportunities. From the outset, it was agreed that the canton and teachers would work together to develop the text books.
Following the restructuring of the educational authority in 1998, LMVZ was reorganised as a largely autonomous entity within the Department of Education.
Today, it is one of Switzerland’s leading educational publishing houses and has received numerous international awards for its top quality, innovative teaching materials
