The Amazing Features of Antarctica’s Plunderfish:

About the Barbeled Plunderfish:

Beneath the surface of the waters off the Southern Antarctic coast one can find a strange-looking fish swimming at depths from between 300 and 2,000 feet.

It is the Plunderfish, and with a name that exotic,  it is a remarkable denizen of the deep.

Despite its name and importance to the bottom fauna of the continental shelf, however, the Plunderfish is not a well-known sea creature

The Barbeled Antarctic Plunderfish – is a small predatory fish species of the "Artedidraconidae" family.

Due to their ability to produce antifreeze glycoproteins, these fascinating water-dwellers are able to occupy freezing habitats.

What makes these Plunderfish even more unique is that their scales possess Ultraviolet (UV) properties, allowing them to glow brightly under UV light – a captivating feature that has been brought to life on this new and exciting Coin!

Issued by the Pobjoy Mint, this coin showcases this strange fish in way accomplished by few other coins.

To replicate that effect, this coin has undergone a special process to highlight some of the scales on the design with special ink so that the coin actually glows in the dark!

On the surface of the coin is featured the "Barbeled Antarctic Plunderfish" swimming along in search of prey like small invertebrates found on or near the sea floor.

This Coin has been released on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory (BAT), a sector of Antarctica claimed by the United Kingdom as one of its 14 British Overseas Territories.

The coins have been minted by the Pobjoy Mint, at their facilities in Surrey, England, on behalf of the Treasury of the British Antarctic Territory.

The Reverse of the 2 Pounds Dark Blue Titanium Coin depicts a Plunderfish in its natural habitat. The inscription reads -"TWO POUNDS".

The Obverse of the 2 Pounds Dark Blue Titanium Coin depicts an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. This design is exclusively used on Pobjoy Mint Coins, whose initials "PM" appear below the Queen's neck.

The peripheral inscriptions read - "BRITISH ANTARCTIC TERRITORY. 2021".

    1. Thanks, Vikram. I found the coin quite fascinating too. It was reported by a private mint in the US and interested me right away. The Pobjoy Mint in Surrey England has quite a few notable issues to its credit including the British Overseas Territories like Falkland Islands, St. Helena etc. I have quite a few of its issues in my collection.
