About Fan Artists:
Dating back to Antiquity, the fan has accompanied humanity since its origins, in the form of braided branches, folded and dried lotus leaves or tufts of feathers.
The former does not bend and allows the air around the face to be refreshed.
An extension of the body, the fan signifies moods and is already a vector of language.
Present in all religious and spiritual rites, it is the metaphor of the divine breath and a messenger between the world of the living and that of the dead.
Tutankhamun made it a scepter emblem of his power. Japanese warlords use it as a weapon. In Greco-Roman times, it became a fashion accessory.
The two main forms of fans still present in our current uses date back to the 16th Century, when the Portuguese brought them back from Japan - the "folded" form (rigid frame and flexible leaf) or "broken" form (rigid strands held by thread or ribbon).
Catherine de Medici introduced its taste and uses to the Italian and French courts, and it was under Louis XIV and Colbert that the corporation of fan-makers was born, becoming one of the jewels of French decorative arts which would shine throughout Europe.
From the end of the 17th century to the French Revolution, it distinguished the hierarchy of women, completed the refinement of their outfits and became a vehicle for the language of love under the name of “screen of modesty”.
It was also adorned with poetry, revolutionary or political slogans.
The second Golden Age extended from the 19th century to the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods, when patents for inventions illustrating French excellence multiplied.
The fan then went dormant until the 1960s when, once again, it made a comeback in fashion, then in our uses in its most sophisticated or playful forms.
In 2020, the profession of fan maker was listed in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage and has since taken on a contemporary dimension in the hands of rare artists...
