4158) "The Beaver", Canada: The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) has issued Proof Silver Dollar Coin which features the Canadian Wildlife Emblem: Date/Year of Coin issue: 2025:
The Royal Canadian Mint has issued Silver Proof Coins marking 50 years of a unique national symbol.
On the Header/Banner the beaver is framed by twisting branches of sugar maple leaves.
Over the centuries, many symbols have become synonymous with Canadian identity, but only a select few have earned the title as official national emblems. From the 17th to the mid-19th century, the beaver was more than just an animal. It was at the centre of the fur trade that was the economic engine of pre-Confederation Canada.
Aside from Canada’s Arboreal maple Leaf Emblem which was officially designated as an official national symbol 30 years ago in 1996, the Beaver was another beloved recognised Canadian symbol which was made official in 1975.
The Beaver or, Castor Canadensis — has long represented Canada’s pioneering spirit and a deep connection to the land.
Throughout Canada’s history, it has evolved from being a vital economic asset to becoming a proud emblem of Canadian sovereignty.
In 2025 the 50th anniversary of the National Symbol of Canada Act of 1975 is being celebrated and serves as a moment to reflect on the beaver’s incredible legacy.
This Canadian legislation passed on the 24th March 1975 officially recognised the beaver as a symbol of Canada's sovereignty.
The Act mandated that any official representation of the beaver in right of Canada would be used and regarded as such.
The beaver had already held significant historical importance for Canada, particularly in the fur trade, but the Act cemented its status as a national symbol.
Cherished as a genuine Canadian icon, the industrious beaver has played a major role in the history of Canada.
It has long served as a symbol of Canadian identity, connecting Canadians to their history and heritage, and to the natural landscapes that surround them.
Other than humans, the beaver is one of the only mammals known to manufacture its own environment, and as an eco-system engineer, its building and logging activities are key to maintaining the health of the wetlands of habitats all around North America.
