About Europa 2021 - Stamps:

EUROPA Stamps are special stamps issued by European postal administrations.

They bear the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.

EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world and have been issued for over 60 years.

Every year a new theme is assigned by PostEurop and all participating countries issue stamps with their own interpretation of the theme. The theme for 2021 is "Endangered National Wildlife"

More about EUROPA Postage Stamps:

EUROPA Postage stamps (also known as Europa - CEPT - European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations - until 1992) are special stamps issued by European Postal Administrations/Enterprises and bears the official EUROPA logo, a PostEurop registered trademark under the aegis of PostEurop in which Europe is the central theme.

EUROPA stamps underline cooperation in the posts domain, aimed at promotion of philately. They also build awareness of the common roots, culture and history of Europe and its common goals.

As such, EUROPA stamp issues are among the most collected and most popular stamps in the world.

Since the first issue in 1956, EUROPA stamps have been a tangible symbol of Europe's desire for closer integration and co-operation.

In 1993, PostEurop became responsible for issuing EUROPA stamps.

When CEPT decided to focus more on telecommunications in 1993, PostEurop took over the management of the Europa issues. The CEPT logo was replaced by a new logo created by PostEurop i.e. the word "EUROPA" leaning towards the right hand side.

Each year, PostEurop's "Stamps & Philately Group" selects the EUROPA stamp theme:

About Europa 2021 - "Endangered National Wildlife Stamps issued by Bailliwick of Guernsey Post:

This year’s PostEurop stamp theme is ‘Endangered National Wildlife’, and Guernsey Post has depicted eight species found in the Bailiwick of Guernsey, which are critically endangered:

These beautiful stamps feature species that are locally registered from critically endangered through to near threatened.

The Stamps:

The eight Stamps issued in the set.

The European Herring Gull used to be Guernsey’s most common gull; however the species is now listed as Near Threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List.

Listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List, the Scaly Cricket, also known as the Atlantic Beach Cricket, is one of the rarest species of cricket. They were previously only recorded in four UK locations but in recent years have been found in Guernsey, Herm and Sark.

Basking Sharks are the world’s second-largest fish. These graceful giants are listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List and are now protected in EU waters and under some international agreements. They are mostly seen in or near the Hurd Deep, an underwater valley northwest of the Channel Islands and the deepest point in the English Channel.

The once common European Eel was often caught to make eel pies and jellied eels, but some estimates show that numbers have declined to less than one percent of historic levels and are now classed as Critically Endangered.

Guernsey and Jersey are the only places where the Near Threatened Black-backed Meadow Ant can be found in the British Isles. An Ant Action Plan was implemented in Guernsey in 2018 to tackle its rapid decline. They can be spotted along the island’s southern cliff paths between Pleinmont and Icart and in field banks close to the cliffs.

Harbour Porpoise are shy and elusive marine animals that spend very little time at the surface and are a particularly difficult species to monitor. Guernsey has a small and vulnerable local population, and the species is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

The coastal habitat of the orange and brown chequered Glanville Fritillary Butterfly is disappearing at an alarming rate. More common in Alderney than anywhere else in the British Isles, it is making a comeback in Guernsey and can be spotted on warm days on the island’s cliff sides.

Porbeagle Shark, distant relatives of the great white shark, are occasionally seen in Bailiwick waters and are listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List.

In 2020 two Guernsey pollock fishermen made national news when they came across a huge 300 lbs porbeagle shark, 12 miles off Cobo Bay.

A stylised Miniature Sheet (MS) containing the two Stamps selected by7 Guernsey Post as the EUROPA-2021 Stamps feature the "Basking Shark" and the "European Eel".

A Collectible Sheet containing the "Basking Shark" EUROPA Stamp (10 nos.) gives the f0llowing description:

" The Basking Shark featured on the 73p Stamp is the world's second-largest fish and listed as Endangered in the IUCN Red List. It is mostly seen in or near the Hurd Deep, an underwater valley northwest of the Channel Islands".

A Collectible Sheet containing the "European Eel" EUROPA Stamp (10 nos.) gives the following description:

"The European Eel depicted on the £1 was once common and frequently caught to make eel pies and jellied eel, but some estimates suggest that numbers have declined to less than one percent of historic levels.

They are now listed as Critically Endangered".
